Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator to lead our efforts in fostering meaningful community relationships and inspiring volunteer participation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Volunteer Program Administration
- Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer program, including reviewing and processing applications, conducting applicant communications, and recommending volunteer placements.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers and volunteer applicants.
- Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate volunteer orientations and onboarding sessions.
- Maintain volunteer records, databases, and schedules, ensuring all information remains accurate and up to date.
- Regularly update volunteer schedules within Basecamp and other designated systems.
- Monitor volunteer participation, engagement, and performance, communicating concerns or recommendations to the management team as appropriate.
- Assist front desk staff with volunteer-related inquiries and customer service needs.
- Monitor and manage volunteer program email communications, responding to inquiries or forwarding messages to the appropriate staff members.
Community Programs and Outreach
- Manage the Community Pet Food Pantry, including coordinating partner pickups and deliveries and maintaining an organized and welcoming pantry space.
- Coordinate the Pet Therapy Program by maintaining relationships with participating facilities, scheduling visits, and coordinating volunteers and animals.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and attending community events that promote the organization's mission, programs, and services.
Organizational Support
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the shelter in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures and Safety Guidelines.
- Represent Pope Memorial SPCA professionally and courteously when interacting with visitors, volunteers, community partners, and the public.
- Support positive public relations through professionalism, attention to detail, and adherence to organizational values.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Education and Training
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Previous experience in volunteer coordination, community outreach, nonprofit operations, customer service, or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Working Conditions
- Fast-paced work environment with multiple competing demands from staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals.
- Regular exposure to animals with varying medical and behavioral needs.
- Potential risk of injury from handling animals.
- Frequent interaction with emotionally charged situations involving animal welfare.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, and movement of supplies and equipment.
- Exposure to both rewarding and challenging situations common within an animal shelter environment.
Work Schedule
This position is scheduled for approximately 20–30 hours per week. Specific hours will be established at the time of hire. Employees may be required to work daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on organizational needs. Work schedules will generally be provided by Friday for the following week.
