JOB SUMMARY:
The Mechanical Designer is responsible for creating and managing all information required for the manufacture of Lakeside’s equipment. This includes collaborating with engineers, manufacturing, and purchasing to ensure quality design, accurate drafting, and timely delivery of production documentation. The Mechanical Designer supports new product development and revisions to existing products, ensuring adherence to internal standards and customer specifications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and Drafting
- Prepare detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using Autodesk Inventor and other CAD software.
- Design equipment based on specifications outlined in the Guide to Engineering, sales proposals, and engineering drawings.
- Develop and maintain design libraries to promote efficiency and reuse of standard components.
- Create “setup sheets” that detail design intent and ensure alignment with company standards.
Documentation and Revision Management
- Compile and submit “check sets” that include equipment specifications, EP sheets, document transmittals, BOMs, control panel layouts, and other key documentation.
- Ensure proper version control and revision tracking for all design documents, including drawings, BOMs, and supporting files.
- Maintain organized records of design revisions, ensuring traceability of design changes and updates.
Bill of Materials (BOM) Management
- Generate and manage BOMs to ensure all required materials, components, and subassemblies are accurately listed.
- Work with the purchasing and production teams to validate BOM accuracy and address any issues that arise.
- Ensure BOMs are up-to-date with the latest revisions and design changes.
Manufacturing Support
- Collaborate with manufacturing to resolve design-related production issues.
- Support design for manufacturability (DFM) to optimize efficiency and reduce production costs.
- Conduct design reviews with production and assembly teams to confirm feasibility and identify potential improvements.
Technical Support and Collaboration
- Provide technical support to internal teams, including production, quality assurance, and field service.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and production teams to address project-specific challenges.
- Contribute to cross-functional design review sessions and propose solutions to identified issues.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify areas for process improvement and suggest enhancements to existing design and documentation workflows.
- Update and refine company design standards, ensuring consistency and quality in all design outputs.
- Stay current with industry trends, software advancements, and best practices in mechanical design.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position is primarily office-based, with occasional visits to shop floors, customer sites, or wastewater treatment plants.
Exposure to warehouse or shop environments, with occasional visits to field sites, which may include exposure to varying weather and worksite conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, and lift/move up to 25 lbs.
Visual acuity to read drawings, analyze data, and work with CAD software.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED WORK HOURS:
Full-time, exempt position.
Standard work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 6:30 AM – 5:15 PM, with additional hours as required to meet project deadlines.
TRAVEL:
Occasional travel to customer sites, job sites, tradeshows, or other company locations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical design
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault (PLM), and ERP systems.
- Strong understanding of sheet metal design, DFM principles, and GD&T.
- Ability to work with both parametric and non-parametric design tools.
- Experience generating manufacturing drawings and design documentation.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in wastewater treatment equipment design.
- Familiarity with control panel design and associated documentation.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements for water treatment equipment.
