The Distribution Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and managing electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity to homes, businesses, and industries. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient distribution of electrical power while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Design, plan, and optimize electrical distribution systems , including overhead and underground lines, substations, transformers, and other components .
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety codes .
- Perform load flow analysis, fault analysis, and voltage drop calculations to assess distribution network capacity and performance .
- Identify and mitigate potential issues affecting system reliability and efficiency .
- Maintain accurate records of distribution equipment , perform condition assessments, and recommend maintenance, repairs, or replacements .
- Specify and select distribution equipment , such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and protective devices, based on voltage levels and load requirements .
- Ensure all distribution system designs meet safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry codes .
- Collaborate with regulatory authorities to secure approvals and maintain compliance.
- Identify opportunities to enhance system reliability, reduce downtime, and improve power quality .
- Evaluate requests for new electrical connections , assess their impact on the network, and design infrastructure to support new customers .
- Manage distribution infrastructure projects from conception to completion, coordinating with construction crews, contractors, and vendors to meet timelines and budgets .
- Respond to power outages, equipment failures, and emergencies , conducting rapid assessments and developing solutions to restore power efficiently.
- Analyze monitoring system data, smart grids, and sensors to improve distribution system performance and support data-driven decision-making.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field ( Master’s degree preferred for specialized roles).
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or equivalent certification ( varies by region ).
- Proficiency in distribution system design software, CAD tools, and power system simulation software .
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is beneficial.
- In-depth knowledge of electrical distribution principles, grid operations, protection systems, and regulatory standards .
- Analytical & problem-solving skills to assess network performance, diagnose issues, and develop solutions .
