Codes medical observation, outpatient, emergency room and/or ambulatory surgery discharge records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations according to diagnosis, invasive and non-invasive procedures using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 classification systems. Abstracts information needed for statistical data, as well as for anesthesia improvement. Provides education to providers in regards to correct coding initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Must possess one of the following credentials: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P), Certified Obstetrics/Gynecology Coder (COBGC), Certified Procedural Coder (CPC) or Certified Procedural Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) .
- College level Applied Science courses in Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology as required by certifying body.
- Two years ICD-10-CM and CPT coding experience or related coding courses acceptable to Health Information Management.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Three years of billing experience.

- Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
- Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
- Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
- Developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.

- Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
