Bring your passion for jazz to the next generation of musicians! Maynard High School is seeking a High School Jazz Band Director to inspire, challenge, and lead our talented student performers. This position is for 1 afternoon/evening per week plus performances.This is a stipend postion as listed in the MEA Union Contract.
TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND DIRECTOR
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in music

Sufficient knowledge of the variety of materials available for Jazz Band use.

An ability to improvise effectively on at least one jazz oriented instrument.

Experience in the coaching or directorship of a jazz ensemble or similar playing experience.
- Such alternative or additional qualifications as the Principal may find appropriate or acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
POSITION GOAL:
- To develop and foster the student's understanding, appreciation and playing abilities of jazz and popular music styles.
- To provide performance opportunities in and outside of school.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instruct students in improvisation, jazz playing techniques and theory.

Organize and prepare rehearsal time so that instruction can b e accomplished within the time allotted.

Recruit and select musicians for each jazz ensemble (middle school and high school) through the administration of a fair and equitable audition procedure.

Cooperate with School Administration and the Music Coordinator on schedule of events and rehearsal schedule.

Selection of all materials for rehearsal and performance use, appropriate for skill level and abilities of students.

Participate in Sponsorship of extra-curricular Jazz Band activities such as Northeast District Jazz Festival, Berklee Jazz Competition and band exchange trips.

Participate in the winter and spring school concert programs.

Supervise the deportment and transportation of students and equipment to and from all events, arranging for chaperones when necessary.

Maintain accurate attendance records of students at rehearsals and functions.

Be responsible for all communication, written or otherwise, to student/parents regarding student's progress, rehearsal schedule, participation in performances and special events in or outside of school.

Provide Principal copies of correspondence to students/parents, and any other pertinent information relevant to program.

Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development and keeping current with new literature, research and teaching techniques.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a stipend position, determined by and consistent with the current agreement between the Maynard School Committee and the Maynard Education Association - Unit A.Workload will be determined by the Principal in conjunction with the Band Director.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Maynard School Committee's policy on evaluation of extra-curricular assignments.
