Oakwood School is seeking a School Nurse to oversee student health and wellness. Oakwood serves bright students in grades 1-8 with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD.
About the Role
This position oversees the school clinic and student health operations, from daily first aid and medication administration to emergency and crisis planning. The Nurse keeps staff and teachers informed of student medical needs, leads clinic administration and inventory, and manages required health compliance and reporting. This role also serves as backup support to the Front Office Receptionist when clinic demand allows.
What You'll Do:
- Staff the school clinic and respond to first aid needs and daily medication administration
- Maintain the Allergy & Medical Conditions List and keep staff informed of student medical needs
- Lead emergency response protocols including seizure and allergic response plans
- Complete required state health reporting and maintain compliance with health regulations for VDOE and accrediting bodies (VAIS, VAISEF, AISGW, etc.)
- Lead the annual review of clinic-related paperwork, handbooks, and policies
- Manage student health paperwork intake, including required medical forms and clearances for the school year
- Support health/medical paperwork intake for summer programs in coordination with the summer program director
- Coordinate with local and state health departments as needed
- Provide backup support to the front office as clinic demand allows
- Lead protocols ensuring MAT-trained staff administer medication consistently and in alignment with school procedures
- Set up and maintain clinic administrative systems including medical supply and medication inventory
- Oversee ordering and upkeep of clinic equipment, including AED pads, batteries, and related parts
- Maintain clinic-related records and documentation in an organized, audit-ready state

A nurse who pairs sound clinical judgment with warmth, distinguishing genuine medical need from anxiety-driven avoidance without ever making a student feel dismissed. A strong communicator who spots patterns across clinic visits and escalates appropriately to parents, staff, and leadership. Someone with a rigorous standard for documentation, keeping clinic records, medication logs, and incident reports accurate and defensible.
Required Qualifications:
- Active Virginia LPN license
- Current CPR/First Aid certification
- Medication Administration Training certificate, or the ability to obtain the certification within 30 days of hire
- 2-3 years of experience in a clinic, pediatric, or school health setting
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a school health setting, especially with elementary or middle school-aged students
- Experience or familiarity with students with learning differences
Schedule
This is a full-time position during the school year, working Monday - Friday from 8:15-3:15, beginning three weeks before the start of school each year, and continuing through one week after the school year ends.
Compensation and Benefits
The hourly rate for this position is $27.00 - $35.00. Placement within the range is determined by years of relevant experience and any additional certifications held. Oakwood offers a comprehensive benefits package; details will be shared with candidates during the interview process.
Physical and Environmental Considerations
Clinic work at Oakwood School takes place in an active school environment. The Nurse must be able to move throughout indoor and outdoor spaces to respond to student needs promptly, wherever they occur on campus. The role requires the ability to communicate clearly with students, families, and staff, and to observe and monitor students closely to assess health needs and support their safety. Occasional lifting or carrying of medical supplies and equipment is required.
