Due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $46.22 per hour.
Why does the job exist?
Chief of Security will be a non-uniform Administrative Management position to oversee the safety and security aspect of Adult Prison Facilities. The position will manage uniformed supervisory staff and Correctional Officer's in the daily operations of the facility. They will ensure non-uniformed staff follow security practices and procedures, supporting all staff in enforcing rules and regulations with the inmate population.
How does it get done?
- Manages a correctional custody security program for an institution through policy review, new policy writing and implementation within facilities.
- Staffing and personnel supervision of correctional staff.
- Inspects custodial, correctional, safety, housing and training activities and facilities to assure compliance with prescribed regulations.
- Documents inspection findings and observations in concise, complete, written reports.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalency and eight (8) years of experience in an adult correctional setting, of which two (2) years must have been as a Correctional Officer Captain, or eight (8) years of experience in corrections; three (3) years of which must be in supervisory or management. Three (3) years of experience in correctional case management and/or coordination of individual prisoner programs in a correctional facility will substitute for required supervisory/management experience. Experience in the areas of social work, guidance, and counseling and/or law enforcement may substitute for up to four (4) years of required experience in corrections. A degree in any field from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
Employment Requirements
This position is designed safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of Federal and State law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Pre-employment background check is required and conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates. Willingness to work under potentially dangerous circumstances in a correctional facility will be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
