Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Japanese Language Instructor to join our team. In this role, you will inspire students to develop their Japanese language skills while creating a positive and supportive learning environment. We are currently seeking candidates to teach Japanese at all levels to adult learners at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC) in Arlington, Virginia.
Responsibilities
- Plan and/or conduct one-on-one and small group Japanese language classes in person.
- Use established curriculum materials to teach classes.
- Follow techniques, methodologies, and approaches that are deemed best instructional practices for language teaching.
- Collaborate with NFATC staff on tasks related to the development or revision of course curriculum, language training materials, or reference materials, including but not limited to text, audio, video, and technology-based media.
- Apply classroom management techniques to provide a respectful, student-centered environment conducive to learning.
- Provide students with encouragement and constructive feedback.
- Conduct informal and formal assessments to evaluate student progress.
- Incorporate the use of instructional technology into the program.
Requirements
- BA/BS, MA/MS, or Ph.D., or foreign equivalent degree(s) in any field.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching adult learners the foreign language they will be providing in a classroom setting (2 or more students).
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching foreign language with proficiency-based or task-based curricula.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience administering proficiency-based assessments (e.g., DLPT, ACTFL, OPI, etc.).
- Educated native or near-native speaker of the language (Level 4 or higher on the ILR proficiency scale).
- A minimum English proficiency level of a 2/2 on the ILR proficiency scale (Limited Working Proficiency).
- Possess the cultural background of the country or geographical region required (i.e.; raised or educated in the country; lived in a cultural enclave or heritage community; demonstrated through work experience or academic preparation; completed formal education—secondary school or beyond—in the cultural environment).
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
The ideal candidate will also have experience:
- Developing foreign language instructional materials and/or curricula;
- Using a Learning Management System as an instructor or administrator;
- Teaching with a communicative approach;
- Incorporating a range of educational technology in teaching;
- Teaching blending learning activities preferred;
- Integrating social media applications for educational purposes;
- Teaching with task-based learning materials;
- Administering proficiency-based assessments; and
- Teaching with vocabulary-based language learning materials.
Pay: $50.00 - $52.00 per hour
