Controls Engineer
Job Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Controls Engineer to join our team. We design, build, and re-tool custom equipment and machines that often integrate into larger machining and assembly lines for major automotive and industrial customers.
This position balances custom engineering on our shop floor with occasional customer site deployments. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable programming new machines from scratch and adapting existing legacy systems to meet new customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
· Flexible Programming: Write original PLC/HMI code for new builds, and modify, translate, or expand existing logic during machine re-tools.
· Shop Floor Startup: Power up, debug, and cycle-test machines on our floor alongside our assembly team before equipment ships.
· Installation & Service Support: Travel to customer facilities to manage machine startup, line integration, and ongoing service.
· Electrical Troubleshooting: Use multimeters and schematics to trace faults, check control circuits, verify wiring, and debug 3-phase motors.
· Team Collaboration: Work closely with our engineering, mechanical, and electrical teams in a collaborative, small-shop environment.
Required Qualifications & Skills
· Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in controls engineering or machine building.
· Dual-Platform Mastery: Proven ability to architect, write code, and debug using both Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC/HMI platforms.
· Legacy Code Fluency: Strong ability to read, troubleshoot, and modify code written by other engineers on older equipment.
· Strong Electrical Debugging: Exceptional ability to read schematics, trace hardware faults, and troubleshoot control circuits, industrial panels, and 3-phase motors.
· Industrial Knowledge: Working knowledge of industrial manufacturing, machining, and assembly processes.
· Travel Flexibility: Ability to travel around 15% of the time for customer facility startups and service calls.
Preferred Qualifications (A Big Plus)
· Robot Programming: Experience programming and teaching robots, especially Fanuc systems.
· CAD Skills: Experience modifying or creating electrical layouts using AutoCAD Electrical.
· Machine Wiring: Hands-on experience with physical machine wiring or building industrial control panels.
