PUMP MAINTENANCE CREW LEADER
Performs responsible skilled work coordinating the activities of a small crew in maintaining, repairing, and installing components of the Town’s lift stations.
An employee in this class leads and participates in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work as a member of a crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of the Town’s wastewater lift stations. Work involves the inspection, repair, and maintenance of sewer lift stations involving mechanical, plumbing, and some electrical maintenance and repair. Employees perform gas monitoring and OSHA required testing in the confined spaces of lift stations and may have contact with public and media in relation to wastewater overflow. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Utility Maintenance Supervisor and is evaluated through periodic conferences, observation of results achieved, and review of records and files and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices. This position has been deemed Safety Sensitive and is designated as essential personnel.
Coordinates and participates in the work of a crew to inspect, repair, and clean wastewater lift stations, emergency generators, and other electrical and pump related equipment in the Town; observes check valves for normal operation.
Exercises valves, cleans wet wells, tests alarms, checks for equal run times on pumps and sufficient flow.
Trouble shoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions; replaces parts; repairs and rebuilds pumps, sensors, and floats; repairs and maintains electrical and electronic systems and generators.
Assigns tasks to workers in the field and performs work as needed. Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions; provides training and performance feedback for employees; ensures that safety procedures are followed.
Operates vacuum and jetting equipment, backhoe, boom truck, and OSHA gas monitoring equipment.
Operates a variety of electrical diagnostic tools such as volt/ohm, amperage meters, continuity testers, and pressure gauges.
Maintains and performs minor repair of tools and equipment; ensures that proper tools and equipment are taken to the work site to avoid work delays.
Performs or participates in performing more difficult or complex tasks.
Prepares records of lift station performance, flow, and other parameters.
Completes work orders and other records.
Performs other related tasks as required.
Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation,
replacement, maintenance and repair of wastewater lift stations.
Considerable knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of pumps, motors, electric panels.
Considerable knowledge of mechanical and plumbing trades.
Considerable knowledge of the use of construction equipment and common hand and power tools.
Considerable knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required by the work, especially detecting methane gas and working in confined spaces.
Working knowledge of electrical applications.
Some knowledge of the application of information technology to the work.
Skill in the operation of line and bucket trucks for installing and removing pumps from lift stations.
Skill in customer service excellence, teamwork, and collaborative conflict resolution.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
Ability to diagnose and make repairs to lift stations as it relates to both electrical and plumbing.
Ability to read lift station operation and service manuals, to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to prepare records of work activities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and reports.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate test equipment and read gauges in confined spaces and operate equipment such as line and bucket trucks and dump trucks in a safe manner.
Graduation from high school supplemented by training in electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades and some experience in maintenance or construction of sewer lift stations, and/or electrical panels, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of valid North Carolina driver's license.
Possession of a Grade I collection Certification.
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tank (N) endorsement preferred.
