The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) of the NMDOJ is comprised of a multifaceted group of professionals who strive to protect the State's vulnerable population and hold bad actors accountable. The Bureau conducts statewide investigations and prosecutions focusing on Medicaid fraud, elder abuse, and abuse of the State's Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waiver population.

Why does the job exist?
The Senior Paralegal provides comprehensive legal and administrative support to attorneys and investigators within the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. This position assists in the investigation and prosecution of complex criminal and civil cases involving Medicaid provider fraud, patient abuse and neglect in healthcare facilities, and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. Responsibilities include reviewing and organizing investigative materials, analyzing medical, financial, and business records, preparing legal documents, maintaining case files, coordinating discovery, conducting legal and factual research, and assisting with trial preparation.
The position ensures the accurate management of confidential information and compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules of criminal procedure, and evidence handling requirements. The Paralegal also assists with subpoena preparation and tracking, document production, exhibit organization, witness coordination, and the management of electronic evidence and case management systems.
How does it get done?
- Provide comprehensive legal support to Assistant Attorneys General and investigators in the investigation and prosecution of Medicaid provider fraud, patient abuse and neglect, and financial exploitation cases
- Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, notices correspondence, and trial exhibits
- Organize, review, and analyze large volumes of medical, financial, business, and investigative records to identify relevant evidence and prepare case summaries
- Maintain and manage electronic and physical case files, ensuring documents are accurately indexed, organized, and maintained in accordance with office policies and evidentiary requirements
- Monitor case deadlines, court schedules, discovery obligations, and litigation calendars to ensure timely compliance with procedural requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and operations of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit

Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment as some statewide travel maybe required. Employment is subject to criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check. Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony offense by a court of this state, any other state or the United States.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25 pounds. Occasional travel may be required.
