We have an immediate opening for a Junior Environmental Inspector or Industrial Hygienist (IH)
The Environmental Inspector or Industrial Hygienist will coordinate and deliver environmental testing services including but not limited to inspections and sampling, for asbestos, mold, water, soil, electromagnetic fields (EMF) and other air quality parameters. Responsible for punctually meeting clients onsite, explaining the sampling/reporting process, drafting proposals, collecting samples and/or inspecting the building where necessary, interpreting lab results with supervision, and drafting a report of findings. Small, family-run industrial hygiene (IH) company located in Bay Area. Work and mobilize primarily from home. Company car, equipment, and training provided to the right candidate. Work will include site visits in the field, and working from home on reports. Some benefits are associated with this position. Hourly wage determined based on experience and qualifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Environmental Inspections: (55%)
Asbestos, moisture and mold inspections of buildings, air quality sampling, lab results interpretation
2. Report Writing: (30%)
Review and interpret findings with supervisor, upload inspection photos and create summary reports, write abatement/remediation plans
3. General Administration: (15%)
Support ongoing organizational needs, including creating templates, writing web content, business development, proposals, etc.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Depending on the candidate, this position may (or may not) have direct reports and will (or will not) directly supervise other personnel
Job Requirements:
- (2) years work experience with an environmental testing company or comparable experience (required)
- Current good standing with Lead and/or Asbestos sampling certifications (preferred, not required)

Education:
College degree in environmental science, chemistry, geology, hydrology, biology and/or other hard science or comparable studies is preferred.
Skills:
- Superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Professional appearance and manner appropriate to represent the company to clients and vendors;
- Observation, reporting and documentation based on inspection notes and lab reports;
- Excellent ability to document inspections and maintain clear written or electronic records;
- Basic personal and environmental safety precautions;
- Recognizing emergencies and knowledge of emergency procedures;
- Maintaining confidentiality of information collected during inspections and found in lab reports;
- Able to discuss basics of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, and general building components;
- Competent mechanically and able to use various meters, pumps and detectors;
- Able to deal effectively and politely in stressful situations
Knowledge:
- Knowledge/experience with sampling/testing protocols;
- Knowledge of general remediation/abatement procedures;
- Understanding of how moisture and air travel through buildings;
- General knowledge and understanding of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, -and most building components and systems;
- General knowledge about at least two of the following categories of environmental contaminants: asbestos, EMF, lead, mold, soil contaminants, VOCs, water contaminants, bacteria;
- Ability to learn on the job and provide services up to, and including, mold inspections and sampling, IAQ inspections and testing, soil sampling and water sampling
Physical:
- Able to drive;
- Have the ability to operate various testing equipment, carefully open/close vials and bags, etc;
- Demonstrated use of safety and personal protective equipment (e.g., ½-face respirator) that may be used in performance of inspection and testing services;
Capable of entering, moving around and exiting crawl spaces and attics (not claustrophobic);
- Able to spend up to 8 hours a day walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling;
- Able to lift and carry 40 lbs;
- Must have good vision and hearing (may be aided), good balance, be able to climb ladders and function well at heights such as might be needed for roof inspections;
Other: (Includes licenses, certificates, age, etc.)
- Valid California driver’s license and be insurable by the company;
- No record of any theft-related crime or felony;
- Not wear fragrances or use fragrant soaps, detergents, or strongly scented personal care products on work days;
- Generally be available between 8-5pm weekdays
Other Preferred Job Qualifications – (not required):
- Mold or other Indoor Environmental certifications; (e.g., lead, radon)
- Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC)
- Lead Inspector or Lead Assessor certification
