The Indian Education Division works to ensure educational equity, cultural inclusion, and academic success for Native American students across New Mexico. Guided by the Indian Education Act, the Division partners with Tribal communities, families, and schools to strengthen educational opportunities. It supports programs that preserve Native languages, honor cultural identity, and promote tribal sovereignty in education, while creating pathways to college, careers, and leadership.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to support the mission of the Indian Education Division by strengthening partnerships with New Mexico Tribes, Pueblos, Nations, and Local Education Agencies to improve educational outcomes for Native American students. The role provides leadership in program administration, grant management, technical assistance, data reporting, and policy implementation to ensure compliance with the Indian Education Act and promote culturally and linguistically relevant educational opportunities.
How does it get done?
Technical Assistance and Grant Management
Maintains an assigned caseload of Pueblos, Tribes, and Nations by providing technical assistance and oversight throughout the grant life cycle, including requests for applications, application review, implementation planning, reporting requirements, budget monitoring, and grant closeout activities.
Creates, reviews and verifies tribal documentation, Intergovernmental Agreements, invoices, budget adjustment requests, and other required submissions to ensure compliance with program requirements and funding guidelines.
Maintains regular communication with tribal partners through phone, email, virtual meetings, and on-site engagement to provide guidance on grant administration, allowable expenditures, reporting expectations, and program implementation.
Conducts desktop monitoring and maintains accurate electronic records to support accountability, transparency, and effective customer service.
Assists with site visits and follow-up monitoring activities to evaluate program implementation and the effective use of grant funds.
Activities may include classroom and program observations, interviews with educational leaders and staff, and collaboration with PED divisions and bureaus.
Participates in tribal consultations and other stakeholder meetings to support the implementation of the Indian Education Act and strengthen partnerships with tribal communities.
Prepares and submits required division reports, including grant monitoring and caseload data, and contributes to the continuous improvement of grant management processes and services.
Specialty Area ¿ Data and Reporting
Leads the development, coordination, and publication of the statewide Tribal Education Status Report.
Oversees data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting activities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure data quality, accuracy, and timely completion of reporting requirements.
Represents the division in data-related meetings and supports data-informed decision-making to advance educational outcomes for Native American students.
Other Division and PED Support
Supports division operations by contributing to team initiatives, meeting project deadlines, and assisting with cross-functional efforts that advance division and department priorities.
Performs other related duties, special projects, and assignments as directed by the Assistant Secretary to support the mission and goals of the Indian Education Division and the Public Education Department.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and four (4) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Moderate travel is required.
