The Department of Applied Social Sciences at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor of environmental public health. Position and Qualifications
The Bachelor of Science in environmental public health is a proposed new major within the public health program set to launch in fall 2028. Public health is an interdisciplinary program that offers undergraduates a well-rounded education integrating the social and natural sciences to champion health equity within population health. The program highly values experiential learning, and students regularly engage in health-related activism, internships, study-abroad, and other experiential-learning experiences. A key responsibility for the position will be to develop the curriculum and envision the design of the environmental public health major with support from colleagues across public health, biology, environmental science/studies, and chemistry.
The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per year. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching excellence at a liberal arts institution. They will also have the opportunity to develop upper-level courses in their area of specialization and will teach in the core curriculum (Hollins’ general education program). Additional duties include service to the department and university, mentorship, academic advising, supervision of undergraduate capstone projects and internships, and faculty governance.
Candidates for this position will have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Dr.PH., or equivalent) in environmental health, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, public health, or closely related fields like chemistry, biology, or environmental science, in hand by July 1, 2027.
The successful candidate will be able to teach introduction to environmental health, environmental health hazards, toxicology, risk management, and air or water quality. Candidates are expected to maintain an active research agenda in one of the aforementioned areas that engages undergraduates within the framework of a small, teaching-focused, liberal arts institution, along with a willingness to work with a variety of undergraduate students in pursuit of their career goals. Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience in developing relationships and establishing external collaborations with industrial and community partners.

The salary for this position is $62,500/year if the selected candidate is hired as an assistant professor and is $69,000/year if the selected candidate is hired as an associate professor.
