Job Title: Bus Driver Trainer

Exempt SAISD Compensation Plan.

Entry hourly rate is at $18.25 with

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, operates a school bus over designated routes to
transport student; organize and conduct instruction and behind-the-wheel training and refresher training for District
bus drivers. To perform duties of a bus driver related to special assigned schedules and other related work as required.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Drives a bus daily over designated routes picking up and discharging students in accordance
with specified time schedules.

2. Transport students and staff on special trips to various locations within the state.
3. Maintain order among students while on the bus and while at bus stops.
4. Follow specified start up and shut down procedures before and after each run.
5. Maintain bus cleanliness in accordance with district guidelines.
6. Prepare log and reports as directed.
7. May be included on the trip assignment rotation list(s) at the discretion of the Director of

Transportation.
8. Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situations according to

established guidelines and administer first aid to passengers as needed.
9. Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses, inspecting interior, exterior and engine of the

vehicles.
10. Report major mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required.
11. Maintain mileage, logs, time records, and related records.
12. Maintain required in-service hours needed and required by law to maintain current school bus

driver’s license.
13. Maintain current knowledge of driving, training, and safety requirements.
14. Determine and provide instruction on appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency

situations according to established guidelines and administer first aid to passengers as needed.
15. Attend safety meetings; driver education and safety programs as directed.
16. Maintain effective communications with co-workers, supervisor, and dispatcher.

17. Provide instruction and assist bus drivers in the performance of their duties; including safety

meetings and driver education programs.
18. Evaluate driver knowledge, skills and performance standards related to efficiency, safety and

legality.
19. Coordinate training activities with the Director of Transportation.
20. Assist in routine departmental functions as requested.
21. May investigate accidents and may monitor performance of evacuation exercises if requested by

Director of Transportation.
22. Conduct driver check-in to be sure all routes are covered, make fog calls to determine if conditions

require a delay, check driver logs and mileage sheets to for accuracy, general record keeping, etc.
23. Provide bus driver training and instruction for drivers to maintain in-service and renewal training

requirements.
24. Maintain driver training records in accordance with State requirements and district policies.
25. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities

expected for this position.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting

agency).

Texas Class “B” or “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)

endorsements OR class “C” driver’s license. Employee hired with “C” driver’s license must obtain the class
“B” CDL license with all required endorsements.

2+ years of successful experience as a Driver; to include 1 year as a school bus driver
Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability

coverage eligibility).

School Bus Driver Certification (Texas Department of Public Safety).
Basic First Aid Certification.
Must reside in the state of Texas.
CDL License Holders must register, consent, and satisfactory clear a background check of the Federal Drug

and Alcohol Clearinghouse maintained by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee

(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

Preferred Requirements

• Successful experience as a School Bus Driver Trainer.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and

diplomacy

Demonstrated ability of safe and defensive driving practices.
Demonstrated ability of proper operations of a school bus.
Knowledge of applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations (Calif. Motor

Vehicle Code and Education Code).

Knowledge of state and local traffic laws and regulations.

Working Conditions

Work Environment:

Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and

equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional

exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting,

standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing,
speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
