The Landfill Service Worker is an entry-level position responsible for supporting landfill operations by directing traffic, assisting customers, identifying unacceptable waste, and performing general labor duties. This role also includes opportunities to operate wheeled equipment under supervision to gain experience in heavy equipment operation. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, customer service-oriented, and eager to learn new skills in the waste management industry.
This is a "mandatory testing" Position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Act as a spotter to direct traffic in and around the landfill, ensuring vehicles are properly routed to designated areas for waste disposal
Assist customers by providing directions and answering basic questions about waste disposal procedures
Ensure that all vehicles and customers follow proper safety protocols and landfill procedures while onsite
Inspect waste brought to the landfill to identify and separate unacceptable materials such as hazardous waste, large appliances, or other non-accepted items
Communicate with customers and inform them of any materials that cannot be disposed of at the site, providing guidance on proper disposal alternatives
Ensure compliance with landfill regulations and environmental standards in waste disposal practices
Perform general labor tasks such as picking up trash, maintaining the cleanliness of the landfill site, and assisting with waste sorting
Maintain and clear access roads, maintain work areas, and perform other tasks to support the overall cleanliness and operation of the landfill
Assist in the routine maintenance of equipment and facilities as directed by supervisors
Operate wheeled equipment such as wheel loaders, skid steer loaders, or other machinery under supervision, assisting with tasks like material handling
Gain hands-on experience in heavy equipment operation, learning about equipment functionality and safety procedures
Perform basic equipment inspections before operation, checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and general equipment condition
Follow all safety protocols and operational procedures to ensure a safe environment for self, coworkers, and customers
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in safety meetings and training sessions
Ensure that all operations adhere to environmental regulations, including proper waste handling and minimizing emissions or waste contamination
Other duties as assigned
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver's License from the state of residence
Obtain Landfill Spotter Certification within 6 Months

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
Note: During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: balancing, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.
