Veterinary Technician

Ten Lives Club is a 501c3 cat shelter in Western New York with 19 additional adoption locations. We have one fulltime vet & are recruiting another vet to join our team either part or full time. Our location cares for strays and surrenders as well as offering a community clinic for reasonable cost spays, neuters, and other veterinary care. Our Vet Clinic provides spay/neuter & medical care to TLC residents, fosters & newly adopted sick cats. This position will work closely with our veterinarians, and other staff and volunteers. This position allows you to develop skills in shelter veterinary medicine, high volume spay/neuter clinics & emergency medicine.
Veterinary Technician Responsibilities:
- Perform proper medical restraint techniques for cats & kittens.
- Have sound mathematical knowledge of Veterinary Technician medicine in order to properly dose medications and or fluids.
- Have general medical skills associated with triage, emergencies, hospitalized patients (follow and maintain a hospitalized cat’s treatment sheet), anticipate changes in cat’s status, and common/specialized diagnostic procedures.
- Have general surgical skills associated with anesthesia and surgical procedures: instruments, sterile technique, surgical induction/recovery, and monitoring, specialized equipment.
- Administer medication according to Veterinarian care plans for sick cats.
- Ability to perform solely or in conjunction with a veterinarian special procedures

- Ability to interpret medical records and record client history accurately on our shelter luv software.
- Knowledge in preventative care, surgical procedures and hospital flow
- The ability to restrain pets in a low stress and safe manner.
- Proficient in sample collection to include blood samples, urine, fecal and skin.
- Ability to properly set up and process laboratory samples and tests
- A self-starter with the desire to continue to advance one’s knowledge and skillset
- Ability to receive constructive feedback in a professional manner
- Answering phone calls, answering customer & foster questions, scheduling visits and procedures
- Light filing, computer entry of files and basic use of Microsoft products is a must.
Skills and Experience:
- Must have a valid NYS Veterinarian Technician license.
- Prior experience working in a Veterinary clinic.
- Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred.
- Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, i.e., ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others.
- Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
- Experience with or ability to learn basic Microsoft products including e-mail and timekeeping.
- Knowledge of Shelterluv a plus, but not required will train the right person
- Able and willing to professionally advocate TLC and the TLC Medical team position on issues.
- Must want to work to further your own learning by asking questions and doing personal research.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and handle animals of varying sizes of cats and kittens, bending, stooping, and walking on a daily basis.
- Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor. Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
- We are a nonsmoking facility, therefore, no smoking allowed on property, have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation.

Job Specifics:
- Full Time
- Work Week Tue – Fri 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am – 1:00 pm 38 hours
- Pay Range: $23 to $27/hour commensurate with experience.
Pay: $23.00 - $27.00 per hour
