Controls Engineer – Field Service (PLC / Industrial Automation)
We're partnering with an industrial automation and controls systems provider that delivers critical automation solutions across municipal and industrial facilities throughout the Mid West.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, PLC Programmer, or Field Service Engineer looking to work on a wide variety of automation projects involving PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, networking, and system commissioning.
As a Field Service Controls Engineer, you'll play a key role in commissioning, troubleshooting, programming, and supporting industrial automation systems across multiple customer sites.
You'll work directly with plant personnel, contractors, consulting engineers, and project teams to ensure automation systems are installed, configured, and operating reliably. This role offers a great blend of technical programming, hands-on troubleshooting, customer interaction, and field-based problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Startup and commissioning of PLC-based control systems
- PLC programming, modifications, and troubleshooting
- HMI and SCADA configuration and support
- Troubleshooting electrical controls, instrumentation, and communication networks
- Control panel checkout and system validation
- Instrument calibration and verification
- Customer training following system startup
- Coordination with contractors, engineers, and facility personnel
- Completion of service reports and technical documentation
- Supporting automation projects from installation through successful operation

What We're Looking For
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, or related technical discipline
- Equivalent industry experience will also be considered
- 2–5 years' experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or field service
- Experience with PLC programming and industrial control systems
- SCADA and HMI experience preferred
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work independently in the field
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills
Travel
This is a highly field-focused role supporting projects across Virginia.
Maximum available rate is $1800/week. Fixed at 40 hours, no overtime.
Expenses covered + per diem
Pay: Up to $1,800.00 per week
