The Department of Public Safety is recruiting to fill multiple Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspector 2 positions within the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP). These positions are assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and are located in Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko.
The incumbents will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles on Nevada’s highways. Inspectors support sworn officers by conducting mechanical inspections, enforcing compliance with State and Federal laws, and working directly with motor carriers to improve safety practices. Primary responsibilities include assisting NHP officers at roadside checkpoints by conducting detailed mechanical inspections of commercial vehicles; determining if inspected vehicles are safe to operate; issuing inspection certifications; placing unsafe vehicles out of service or requiring corrective repairs within established timeframes; re-inspecting vehicles and specifying corrective actions; recommending chronic or flagrant violators for referral to the U.S. Department of Transportation; working with assigned motor carrier companies across Nevada, including tour bus companies, and hazardous material carriers, to schedule inspections, identify deficiencies, and train company staff on inspection procedures, laws, and safety regulations; maintaining records of motor carriers operating within the State and prepare reports documenting inspections, technical assistance provided, and areas requiring additional oversight; inspecting company records including registrations, driver logs, licenses, and medical certificates to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations; conducting inspections of vehicles transporting hazardous materials including verification of load securement, placarding, cargo compatibility, tanker certifications, and container security.
This position plays a key role in protecting the traveling public by identifying unsafe vehicles and operators, improving compliance among motor carriers, and ensuring hazardous materials are transported safely.

Communicate effectively to exchange information, issue repair notices, and defend decisions; make public presentations to provide training in regulatory and mechanical aspects of commercial vehicle safety; develop reports and correspondence.
