Landscape Consultant
Benson Landscape & Design — Victor, NY
Full-time, year-round · In person · Mon–Fri + rotating weekends
WHO WE ARE
For nearly 40 years, Benson Landscape & Design has built its reputation on trust — repeat clients, word-of-mouth referrals, and a team of people who genuinely love what they do. We call it The Benson Way: showing up hungry, kind, and humble. That means looking out for your coworkers and clients before yourself. It means your character and your work speak for each other.
Every employee — from crew to leadership — gathers each morning for a daily rollout: a team meeting where we come together, support one another, share updates, and recognize people doing outstanding work. Birthdays, anniversaries, safety milestones, and awards are all celebrated together.
We’re not pushy. We don’t chase volume. We’re deeply skilled, widely trusted, and we welcome people who are wired the same way. If you’re looking for a place to make a quick commission and move on, this isn’t it. If you want to build something — a career, a reputation, a book of clients who call you first — keep reading.
Core values: Safety · Quality · Positivity · Sustainability · Teamwork · Diversity
ABOUT THIS ROLE
This is a consulting role — not a sales position. No two days look exactly the same. You’ll move between client appointments, job site check-ins, proposal writing, and learning Benson’s processes and standards. Managing your time well and knowing how to prioritize is just as important as your landscape knowledge.
When you’re with a client, you’re advising the way a trusted contractor advises theirs — with honesty, expertise, and a long view. That means proactively flagging problems a client hasn’t noticed yet, explaining why grass won’t grow under a mature tree, or why a particular soil won’t support what they’re envisioning. Then you’ll build a comprehensive proposal and see the project through from first conversation to final walkthrough.
When you’re not with clients, you’re checking in on crews and jobs in progress, writing and refining proposals, following up on leads, and building your knowledge of the Benson way of doing things. The right candidate thrives in that mix — organized and self-directed, but always a team player.
THE BACKGROUND THAT SETS YOU UP HERE
We’re not looking for one specific path. What matters is that you’ve worked in the field and understand how landscapes actually function — how they’re built, how they grow, and how they fail. Strong candidates typically come from:
- Landscape construction or design-build
- Landscape maintenance
- Tree care or arboriculture
- Horticulture
- Hardscape installation
If your background has given you a feel for grade, drainage, soil, plant health, and how outdoor spaces change over time — we want to hear from you. We’ll build the rest together.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL
- You can read a site — noticing grade issues, drainage problems, soil conditions, shade patterns, and root competition before a client has to point them out
- You understand plant biology and soil science well enough to explain to a homeowner why something isn’t working and what will
- You listen more than you talk, and ask the right follow-up questions
- You can visualize spatial change and help clients see it — through conversation, sketches, or design tools
- Detail-oriented: proposals are complete, accurate, and anticipate client questions before they’re asked
- Professional, warm phone presence — many clients meet Benson by phone before they meet us in person
- Highly organized: managing multiple active projects and leads without anything slipping
- Comfortable giving honest recommendations even when they differ from what a client initially asked for
- Hungry to keep learning, humble enough to know there’s always more to know, and kind enough that clients and coworkers both feel it
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Manage a schedule of client appointments, site visits, and job check-ins — balancing your time between new consultations and active projects
- Meet with clients on site to listen, assess conditions, and understand their vision — including what they haven’t yet found the words for
- Identify and clearly explain site challenges: drainage, grade, soil deficiencies, shading, root competition
- Build detailed, accurate proposals covering all phases of work — materials, labor, sequencing — from start to finish
- Walk clients through proposals with clarity and honesty, explaining trade-offs and long-term implications
- Check in on crews and jobs in progress to monitor quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction
- Learn and apply Benson’s processes, procedures, and standards — there’s a right way to do things here, and we’ll teach you
- Maintain timely, professional communication from first inquiry through project closeout and beyond
- Follow up on leads and proposals without letting anything fall through the cracks
- Nurture long-term relationships through consistent follow-up and genuine care for outcomes
- Show up for the daily team rollout — because being part of this team means showing up for each other
PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
- Experience with landscape or hardscape design-build projects
- Ability to produce hand sketches or landscape plans
- Familiarity with design software (Dynascape, Structure Studios, CAD, or similar)
- Horticulture or landscape architecture degree
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Competitive base salary with commission and bonus opportunities
- Company vehicle
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid vacation and holidays
- CNLP certification sponsorship
- Pesticide applicator and technician licensing support
- Paid training and professional development
- Life and disability insurance
- Room for advancement — we are a growing company and we promote from within. If you invest in us, we invest in you.
- Team events and company culture year-round
