Job Overview
The Controller is responsible for leading the organization’s day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions while ensuring the highest standards of financial integrity, internal controls, and audit readiness. In addition to core accounting responsibilities, this role serves as a key financial partner within a self-funded, data-driven health plan environment.
The Controller is expected to translate financial and claims data into actionable insights that support operational decision-making, cost management, and improved health outcomes. This position is designed for growth into a broader operational finance leadership role, with increasing responsibility for connecting financial performance to utilization trends, care delivery, and strategic initiatives across the organization.
Supervision Received: Reports directly to the CFO.
Responsibilities
Core Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Own all accounting processes, including general ledger, accruals, financial close, and financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly financial statements (balance sheet, profit & loss, cash flow) within defined close timelines and ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Lead and develop the accounting team, including direct supervision, performance management, and coaching to ensure high-quality output, accountability, and continuous growth of team capabilities.
- Lead audit preparation and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.
Health Plan Financial Operations
- End-to-end ownership of financial and claims-related reporting, including review and analysis of claims payments and IBNR methodologies.
- Partner with operations and analytics teams to understand and interpret utilization trends, including ER, inpatient, and specialty care drivers.
- Demonstrated understanding of insurance economics within a self-funded model, including cost drivers, risk exposure, and claims performance dynamics.
Operational Finance and Cross-Functional Partnership
- Act as a financial partner to operations, care delivery, and analytics teams to ensure alignment between financial outcomes and operational performance.
- Support strategic and operational decision-making by connecting financial data to real-time business activity.
- Identify opportunities to improve cost efficiency, financial predictability, and performance outcomes.
Board and Executive Communication
- Prepare and deliver clear, decision-useful financial insights to leadership and the Board of Trustees, clearly explaining key drivers of financial performance.
- Communicate complex financial and claims information in a concise, actionable manner to executive leadership and non-financial stakeholders.
Compliance, Controls, and Continuous Improvement
- Ensure all federal, state, and local reporting requirements are met accurately and on time.
- Maintain strong internal controls and identify risks related to financial reporting, claims activity, and compliance, and take proactive steps to mitigate them.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities.
Performance Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background screening.
- Strong foundation in GAAP and full accrual accounting.
- Demonstrated ability to manage accounting operations and lead a small team.
- Experience preparing financial reports and communicating results to leadership audiences.
- Minimum 5 years of professional accounting experience.
- Ability to interpret financial and operational data and generate actionable insights.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required. Healthcare, insurance, nonprofit, or governmental accounting experience preferred.

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Copilot functionality and familiarity with LLM use cases.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online and similar accounting cloud-based applications.
Pay: $140,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
