The Exercise Specialist is responsible for monitoring the fitness floor, being responsive to members and guests by offering assistance, and educating Center members on the safe and correct use of cardio and weight training equipment. This person performs orientation/assessments, provides exercise prescriptions, answers fitness and wellness related questions in adherence with ACSM standards and guidelines, and promotes fitness programs and personal training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Orient new members to their exercise program, equipment useand safety, documentation, training heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion.
- Assistmembers with proper use of equipment, answering fitness/wellness questions pertaining to their workouts, and monitoring their workouts while using the fitness floor.
- Evaluate client's overall level of fitness, with special attention to cardiovascular function and metabolism.
- Develop individualized exercise prescriptions and design exercise programs for a diverse population, including high riskclientele, based on assessment outcomes, goals, needs, and preferences.
- Perform daily department walk through to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Immediately identify, report, and document any operational defects or equipment issues
- Perform daily facility and equipment maintenance and cleaning processes to include:wiping down equipment, re-racking weights, conducting equipment checks and noting any areas needing attention/repair, and maintaining an organized and clutter free workout area.
- Respond to member concerns, suggestionsand complaints in a timely (24-48 hours), professional and consistent manner. Consistently offer the highest level of personalized member service while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic, and helpful attitude.
- Respond to emergencies according to protocol and file appropriate paperworkand documentation.
- Maintain member/client confidentiality. Keep accurate, timely, and organized records.
- Support members on the fitness floor by engaging in conversation and offering assistance.Support, teach, and encourage members to meet their fitness goals.
- Participate in Center and community eventsas needed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Teach safe and effective group exercise classes.
- Assistin the implementation of incentive programs, health promotion activities and other specialty programs.
- Develop relationshipand encourage member referrals.
- Promote (internally and externally) classes, programs, and eventsthroughout Center.
- Participate in corporate wellness programming as assigned.
- Participate in Center classes, programs, services, and events to better understand all ofthe Center Attend fitness department meetings and all team meetings.
- Attend continuing education classes to keep certifications current.
- Maintain exemplaryrecord of attendance.
- Maintain a professional attire and demeanor at all times.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
- Have experience and working knowledge of protocols and programs for working with special populations or with specific areas of concern.
- Demonstrate knowledge of exercise physiology and fitness programming.
- Must be able to distinguish contraindicated exercises.
- Demonstrate knowledge of designing and modifyingexercise programs for high risk
- Share ideas and knowledge with team members, thus broadening resources, creating more revenue streams, and assistingmembers reach their goals.
- Keeps current with Center related programs, policies, and procedures.
- Exhibit flexibility in working with new ideasand methodologies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BS or MS Degree requiredin Exercise Science or related field (Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Athletic Training).
- Nationally Accredited Personal Training Certification requiredwithin 6 months of employment (ACSM,NASM,NSCA preferred).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certificationsrequired.
- Minimum 1 year experience in a fitness center environment preferred.
- Basic computer literacy required.
- Outgoingpersonality and excellent communication skills are essential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. Some lifting may require additionalassistance from another staff person.
- Grasping and gripping movements.
- Occasional exposure to bodily fluids.
- Occasional lifting, pulling, climbing, kneeling, and bending.
