Overview
Join our dedicated team as a Homeless Shelter Site Monitor, where you will play a vital role in creating a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. This dynamic position offers the opportunity to directly impact lives by ensuring the shelter operates smoothly, residents’ needs are met with compassion, and safety protocols and shelter rules are rigorously maintained. You will be the frontline presence, fostering trust and stability within a diverse community while managing daily operations with energy and professionalism.
Duties
- Rule Enforcement: Fairly, consistently, and firmly enforce all shelter resident rules and behavioral policies without exception.
- Operational Boundaries: Maintain strict, professional staff-to-resident boundaries, adhering fully to internal policies (e.g., zero tolerance for gifting personal items, changing rules, or fraternization).
- Safety & Surveillance: Conduct regular rounds of the facility and monitor overnight activity to ensure a safe environment for staff and residents.
- Conflict De-escalation: Responsibly manage and de-escalate high-stress situations, behavioral outbursts, or non-compliance using calm, commanding, and professional communication.
- Incident Reporting: Maintain accurate, objective logs of shift activities, rule violations, and emergency situations.
- Logistics Support: Assist with overnight intake, meal distribution setup, and light facility cleanup to keep operations orderly.
Experience
- Supervising experience in social services or shelter environments preferred.
- Alternatively, experience in security, corrections, military service, law enforcement, or highly structured residential/detention facilities is also preferred.
Qualifications
- Proven ability to work effectively with high-risk populations including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or behavioral challenges.
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities and underserved populations is highly valued.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, conflict management strategies, and de-escalation methods.
Hours
- The overnight shelter is open from 7 PM to 7 AM. Shifts are 8-hours and 4-hours during the overnight hours.
