Job Summary
Esquivel Grading & Paving, Inc. is seeking an experienced Project Engineer with a strong background in contractor-side Public Works construction. This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone who can step in and contribute immediately with minimal supervision.
This role is approximately 60–70% field-based across San Francisco, working in active construction environments in all weather conditions, with the remaining time spent in the office supporting project execution. The role involves working closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and governmental agencies to ensure that projects comply with design specifications, budgets, schedules, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:
- Support project managers in maintaining construction schedules and budgets.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements for executing projects.
- Perform takeoffs and quantity tracking tied directly to project billing
- Support and validate elevations, layout, and laser work
- Prepare and maintain accurate as-built drawings
- Identify and document changed and unforeseen conditions in real time
- Draft, track, and support change order requests
- Manage and build project schedules
- Take ownership of RFIs, submittals, and project documentation
- Track and manage force account work
- Inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered. Take corrective actions as needed.
- Field surveying and work layout support including elevation, control points, and compilation of as-built data.
- Maintain accurate logs/records of the activities associated with RFI/Submittal/COR processes and ensure that critical pending items are brought to the forefront.
- Assist in preparing monthly pay applications and change order documentation.
- Preparation of 3 week schedule, 9 day look ahead, weekly schedule update and monthly Project Schedule Baseline Update.
- Project Layouts, USA Layout (calling and updates), Quality control supervision, Quantity tracking Budget management
- Experience with quantity takeoffs, measurements, and billing support
- This role may require extended hours, including evenings or weekends, based on project needs.
Required Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should have the following experience:
- 2+ years of Project Engineer experience on the contractor side of Public Works projects
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and project documents
- Direct experience with asphalt paving and/or concrete work (sidewalk, curb, gutter, roadway)
- Proven experience handling RFIs, submittals, as-builts, and change orders with ownership—not just administrative support
- Valid CA driver’s license and ability to travel between job sites
Work Environment
This role requires regular presence on active construction sites throughout San Francisco. Work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to weather, noise, and typical construction site conditions.
