Located in Livonia, Michigan, spanning 3 facilities (100,000+ sq. ft.) with over 130 employees, Beaver Aerospace & Defense is one of Héroux-Devtek’s centers of excellence for design, development, manufacturing, and assembly of ball screws, actuation systems and other aerospace components.

Summary:
The Grinder performs grinding of ID/OD surfaces of metal objects. This job description indicates the general nature and level of the work that is expected. It is not designed to contain a comprehensive or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities. Other duties may be required.
Main responsibilities:
- Grinding faces and diameters holding tolerances of between .0005"-.00005." Ability to inspect faces and diameters using micrometers, gages and amps.
- Load work pieces into grinding machines, then perform specific grinding operations.
- Finish surfaces of work pieces, using prescribed equipment, grinding wheels and hand tools.
- Inspect and measure workpieces to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet specifications.
- Monitor machine operations to determine whether adjustments are necessary; stop machines when problems occur.
- Select and mount grinding wheels on machines, according to specifications, using hand tools and applying knowledge of abrasives and grinding procedures.
- Set up and operate grinding or polishing machines to grind metal parts, tools, or work pieces.
- Study blueprints or layouts of metal workpieces to determine grinding procedures, and to plan machine setups and operational sequences.
Our ideal candidate:
- High school diploma or equivalent, with vocational training or 3+ years of grinder experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, including knowledge of machine and tool design, use, repair, and maintenance.
- Skilled in operating and monitoring equipment, with the ability to read gauges/dials and catch issues before they become problems.
- Solid troubleshooting ability — can determine root causes of operating errors and take corrective action.
- Comfortable performing routine equipment maintenance and identifying when service is needed.
- Working knowledge of quality control analysis, including inspecting and testing for conformance to standards.
- Good manual dexterity and control precision for making fine, repeatable adjustments.
- Applies basic math to solve shop-floor problems.
- Clear written and verbal communicator, able to follow and document work instructions accurately
