Houck & Christensen CPAs, LLC is a boutique aviation tax firm built around a single, focused mission: to simplify the complex world of aviation tax and empower aircraft owners and operators to make confident, compliant decisions. We are not a generalist firm with an aviation department. Aviation tax is all we do.
We are growing, and we are looking for a technically strong tax professional ready to do meaningful work in a remote-first firm environment. If you thrive with autonomy, take pride in precision, and want to build something alongside a high-performing team, this role is for you.
Position Details
Location: Remote within the United States (firm offices in Orlando, FL and Casper, WY). Whether you are based in a major metro like Orlando, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Phoenix, Nashville, or Atlanta, or anywhere else across the country, we welcome candidates from all U.S. locations.
Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. | Flexible schedules considered
Compensation: We pay well for the right person. Compensation is competitive and based on your experience and what you bring to the role.
Aviation Tax Specialist
We are looking for a technically strong tax professional who can operate with confidence across a complex, multi-state compliance environment and bring genuine intellectual curiosity to the research and strategy side of aviation tax. This is not a heads-down compliance processing role. You will be expected to think, advise, and contribute.
The ideal candidate brings a high standard for their own work, adapts quickly to new tools and processes, and is energized by the opportunity to help shape how a growing boutique firm operates. Aviation tax expertise is not required on day one. The right technical foundation and the right mindset are.
Tax Specialist Responsibilities
- Income Tax & Fringe Benefit Analysis: Preparing annual income tax analysis, including IRC 274 entertainment cost disallowance and fringe benefit calculations for personal and entertainment use of aircraft
- Other Tax Compliance: Although our firm does not prepare federal income tax returns, this role includes preparing and filing various state sales tax returns, preparing annual property tax renditions for various states, and assisting with Federal Excise Tax calculations and reporting, all related to aircraft ownership
- Flight Data & Passenger Coding: Gathering and analyzing flight log activity and passenger coding
- Client Communication & Practice Development: Serving as a key point of contact for client inquiries; responding to tax correspondence with clarity and urgency; and contributing to the development and streamlining of firm procedures to build efficiencies and automation
- Research & Tax Strategy: Researching tax laws for federal and state tax compliance; reviewing, interpreting, and implementing new or revised laws; recommending tax strategies by researching federal, state, and local taxation issues; and drafting tax memorandums with research findings
Tax Specialist Requirements
- Degree in Accounting
- Active CPA certification
- 5 to 7 years of proven public accounting experience as a Tax Accountant, Tax Analyst, or similar; candidates with greater experience are encouraged to apply
- Strong knowledge of tax accounting laws and procedures
- Strong technology skills with a focus on the Microsoft Office 365 platform and Excel
- Outstanding analytical skills and keen attention to detail
- Self-motivated and results-oriented; able to manage deadlines and competing priorities
- Anticipates problems before they arise and proactively resolves issues
- Willing to wear multiple hats and do whatever it takes to get the job done
- A passion for aviation would be helpful but is not required
Why Work With Us?
We're redefining what a CPA firm can be.
AVIATION-EXCLUSIVE FOCUS
Most CPAs spend their careers as generalists. At H&C, you go deep. Aviation tax is all we do, which means you will build specialized expertise that sets you apart in the market and makes your work genuinely interesting every day.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
In this role you will collaborate closely with experienced team members who will support your growth in aviation-specific tax knowledge. You will also serve as a key point of contact for our clients, a base that includes aircraft owners and the advisors who support them. It is a client profile that is rare in public accounting and rewarding to serve.
A PRACTICE BUILT ON CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS, NOT VOLUME
Our clients choose to work with us because of the quality of our guidance, not a contract. We deliberately manage workload so our team can deliver exceptional, hands-on client service and still have a life outside of work. That keeps the work honest, the relationships strong, and the standard high.
AUTONOMY WITH ACCOUNTABILITY
You will have clear priorities, defined roles, and regular feedback loops. You will know exactly what is expected, have the independence to execute, and work alongside partners who are invested in your growth.
LOCATION INDEPENDENT
Work from anywhere in the United States. No commute, no office politics, and a schedule built around getting the work done well.
100% SUPPORTED
You have goals and aspirations, and we will support you to achieve them. Proven training, tools, and resources are provided so you can focus on the work, not the infrastructure.
