SUMMARY : This is a variety of routine and specialized work in performing security duties for the courts and court personnel, and enforcing order among prisoners at the county jail. Work involves responsibility for preventing escape, maintaining order, and for escorting prisoners to and from their cells. This classification has no supervisory responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Providing security and transportation of inmates to and from locations such as hospitals, boot camps, doctors’ offices, et cetera
• Coordinating with hospitals and medical staff in transporting mentally ill and alcoholic patents to appropriate medical facilities under doctor and court orders
• Keeping logs and records of every person transported
• Locating warrants that active on subjects being transported to jail on warrant arrest
• Observing and maintaining order and movement of individuals in custody
• Maintaining security and order in the court
• Providing security for sequestered juries
• Transporting and guarding juveniles for court
• Performing duties as Bailiff as required
• Serving subpoenas from court upon citizens as required
• Assisting Public Defenders and attorneys with prisoner/client conferences at the courthouse
• May be assigned to transport or patrol divisions and perform designated tasks
• May be assigned to work as Emergency Medical Technician in the Jail Clinic
• All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
• Performing other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Two year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field
• Two years law enforcement or corrections experience
• Successful completion of a technical or college program in Basic Emergency Medical Technology if required by assignment
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet all eligibility requirements established by the Sheriff’s Department for promotion to this classification.
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must be a citizen of the United States or legally qualified to work in the United States
• Must have the ability to pass a physical examination
• Must have no record of any felony conviction
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
• Basic mandate certification as Deputy Sheriff; maintain certification
• Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the State of Georgia if required by assignment; maintain certification
• Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid; maintain certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, codes, radio signals, and/or materials as they relate to assignment
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state, laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to assignment
• Knowledge of business English, spelling, and grammar
• Knowledge of basic business mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
• Knowledge of the Douglas County courts and criminal justice system; legal processes as they relate to assignment
• Knowledge of or ability to learn the Douglas County geography as related to assignment
• Knowledge of local Board of Health regulations and requirements as they relate to assignment, facility, equipment, and vehicles
• Knowledge of modern law enforcement and corrections principles, practices, operations, procedures, techniques, and equipment; federal, state and local criminal, traffic, and juvenile laws; legal procedures, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to county government and correctional institutions and to apply such knowledge to specific situations; the nature and risks of law enforcement; and the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office
• Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and equipment
• Knowledge of municipal infractions and county ordinances
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
• Knowledge of specialized software, machinery, materials, terminology, and/or forms essential to the assignment
• Skill in analytical thinking; ability to apply a wide range of abstract and concrete concepts to problems and issues
