JOB SUMMARY:

To assist the nursing staff in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the activities that occur in the nurse’s department by performing clerical and receptionist duties and maintaining the physical environment of the area. Prepares and compiles records in the nursing department by performing the following duties. This position is open for full-time night shift.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

Keeps all patient information confidential and respects patients’ privacy.

Performs clerical functions for providers within the Health Unit Coordinator’s sphere of responsibility.
- Notifies ambulance staff or air care service for transfer to another facility.
- Efficiently notifies on call staff for all departments including medical staff.
- Keeps the on call schedule updated as directed.

Prepares appropriate supplies and notifies aide/nurse specimen needed per orders. Delivers specimens to the lab following approval/request of the nurse.

Prepares and keeps current the daily census report and other forms as necessary.
- Efficiently navigates the electronic health record (EHR) as warranted for assigned tasks.
- Performs clerical duties related to the admission and discharge of patients. Obtaining and entering patient data into the EHR, and verification of current data. Assisting with admission, discharge, and transfer data as warranted.
- Registering new patient encounters and enters patient information into the EHR.
- Assists in orientation of new staff to clerical duties of the unit.
- Notifies various departments, family, nursing home, or necessary others when a patient is dismissed or transferred. Fills out required transfer forms, consents, and prepares copies of the medial record as ordered to accompany patient or fax if requested.
- Performs various related clerical duties (ie: forwards records as ordered, set up follow-up appointments, prepares reports and maintains records, files, and manuals according to procedure and policies accepted by the hospital and the nursing unit.)

Keeps nursing department area neat and orderly.
- Answers telephone and intercom calls and provides information or relays messages to patients and medical staff. Directs visitors to patients’ rooms.
- Distributes mail, newspapers, and flowers to patients.
- Participates in economical utilization of supplies and stocking the department.
- Communicates forms and clerical supply needs to Senior Director of Nursing.
- Keeps informed by reading emails.
- Utilizes standard precautions for infection control.
- Retrieves patient information from EHR upon request while assuring that all medical records are protected.
- Performs various other functions as assigned by the charge nurse.
- Promptly assists new admissions to their assigned room if nurse is not available or as directed by charge nurse.
- Accompanies dismissal patient to transportation when assigned.
- Attends and participates in departmental meetings / in-services, Brodstone Healthcare’s quality improvement program, etc.

EDUCATION:

GED or High School diploma
EXPERIENCE:

Preferred

1-3 months related experience and/or training of education in clerical and computer experience.
- Knowledge of medical and technical terminology.
CERTIFICATE, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

BLS certification within 3 months of employment
