The congregation of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church, in seeking a new priest, hopes for someone who embodies both a deep reverence for tradition and a genuine openness to the evolving needs of modern life; a shepherd who can honor the richness of liturgy while also meeting people where they are with compassion and humility. We look for a priest who is understanding in the truest sense, one who listens before speaking, who approaches each person’s story with empathy rather than judgment, and who recognizes that faith journeys are rarely linear or simple. Our community desires a leader who is not distant or authoritative in a rigid way, but rather community-minded, present at local gatherings, invested in relationships, and committed to fostering a sense of belonging that extends beyond Sunday services into everyday life. We seek someone who embraces all people, regardless of background, identity, or life circumstance, creating a space where everyone feels seen, respected, and welcomed at the table.
At the same time, we pray for a priest who is grounded in the traditions of the Church, able to offer the stability and continuity that ancient practices provide, while remaining open-minded enough to engage thoughtfully with new ideas, questions, and perspectives. Such a priest will guide us gently but intentionally in our spiritual growth, offering sermons and conversations that challenge as well as comfort, encouraging deeper reflection, prayer, and service. In moments of grief, they will be a steady and compassionate presence, sitting with those who mourn without rushing us through our pain. In times of love and celebration, they will share in the joy with authenticity and warmth. And, during crises of faith, they will neither dismiss doubt nor fear it, but instead walk alongside those struggling, helping us explore our questions with honesty and hope.
Ultimately, our community seeks not perfection, but a faithful companion and leader, someone who can hold the tension between tradition and change, who nurtures both individual and communal spiritual life, and who inspires trust through consistency, kindness, and a sincere commitment to living out the Gospel in word and action.
