JOB SUMMARY
The Child Life Specialist at North Mississippi Health Services plays a pivotal role by coordinating patients and families naviagation through the stress of ilness, injury, and hospitalization by providing developmentally appropriate support. Advocate for the child, providing tools to help them cope, understand thieir treatment, and maintain a sense of normalcy in a challenging environment. Extensive interaction with patients, families, hospital employees, physicians, and community resources necessitates strong human relations skills.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assesses the psychosocial, emotional, and developmental needs of patients to develop individualized care plans.
- Prepares children for and assists children during medical tests and procedures.
- Uses therapeutic and medical play, to educate and explain procedures, reducing fear and increasing understanding for children.
- Implement non-pharacological pain management techniques, including distraction, relaxation, and guided imagery during treatment.
- Acts as an advocate for the patient, working closely with doctors, nurses, and social workers to promote emotionally safe care.
- Supports families during hospital stays or challenging events.
- Participates in patient/family teaching about hospital and/or procedures
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of interventions in the electronic medical record.
- Attends in-service education programs, staff conferences, community resource meetings, and workshops.
- Performs work assignment according to rules and regulations.
- Assumes additional duties as needed.
