Make a Difference in Your Community!
Lifesource Group is looking for caring, dependable, and motivated people to join our team as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). Learn more about our organization at lifesourcegroup.org
As a DSP, you’ll work one-on-one with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them live the lives they choose and participate in their communities. Every person we support has different goals, interests, abilities, and support needs—which means every day as a DSP can look a little different.
This is a hands-on, relationship-based job for someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, and helping others become more independent.
What Does a DSP Do?
Your job is to provide individualized support based on each person’s goals and needs. Depending on the person you work with, you might:
- Help someone learn or practice everyday living skills
- Support grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, or other household activities
- Help someone get out into the community and participate in activities they enjoy
- Support communication, decision-making, and self-advocacy
- Help with personal care or other activities of daily living when needed
- Practice skills that help someone become more independent
- Provide transportation or help someone navigate their community
- Support recreational and social activities
- Help problem-solve barriers that are getting in the way of someone's goals
- Encourage choice, independence, confidence, and self-determination
Most importantly, you'll get to know the people you support as individuals. Good support isn't about doing things for someone that they can do themselves—it's about providing the right amount of assistance so they can build skills, make choices, and have greater control over their own lives.
There’s Some Documentation, Too
DSPs are also responsible for documenting the services they provide. You'll complete service notes and other required records that help us understand how someone is progressing toward their goals.
You'll need to:
- Complete accurate service notes and documentation
- Record your work time, mileage, and applicable expenses
- Submit documentation on time
- Communicate changes, concerns, successes, and barriers to your Provider Resource Manager (PRM)
- Follow each client's Individual Support Plan and other support documents
We provide training on our documentation systems and expectations.
What We're Looking For
You don't need to know everything on your first day. We provide training, job shadowing, and ongoing professional development.
A great DSP is someone who is:
- Dependable and able to follow an agreed-upon work schedule
- Respectful of other people's choices, preferences, identities, and lifestyles
- Patient, empathetic, and able to maintain professional boundaries
- Comfortable helping people work through challenges
- Willing to learn and accept feedback
- Able to communicate clearly and professionally
- Comfortable working independently while knowing when to ask for help
- Curious, creative, and willing to try different approaches when something isn't working
- Committed to treating adults with disabilities with dignity and respect
Experience supporting people with intellectual or developmental disabilities is preferred, but not required for every position. Relevant life experience and transferable skills can also make you a great candidate.
Basic Requirements
To work as a DSP with Lifesource Group, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Be legally eligible to work in the United States
- Be able to successfully complete required background screening
- Have a valid driver's license if driving is required for your position
- Maintain an acceptable driving record and current auto insurance if transporting clients
- Obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire
- Be comfortable using basic online technology for communication, training, and documentation
- Be available for the schedule associated with your assigned client(s), which may include evenings, weekends, or holidays
Training & Professional Development
We want our DSPs to continue learning and growing.
New employees receive orientation and on-the-job training, including opportunities to shadow experienced staff. DSPs also participate in ongoing professional development throughout the year.
Training may cover topics such as person-centered supports, communication, positive behavior support, safety, documentation, disability services, diversity and inclusion, and other skills that help you become a stronger support professional.
The Kind of Support We Believe In
At Lifesource Group, the person receiving services is at the center of the work.
We believe adults with disabilities should have meaningful choices about their lives, relationships, activities, and communities. Our job is to provide the support each person needs while respecting their autonomy, dignity, preferences, and right to make decisions.
We're looking for DSPs who don't just want to take care of people—we want people who are excited to work alongside them as they pursue their own goals and build lives that are meaningful to them.
If that sounds like work you'd be proud to do, we'd love to hear from you.
