The Building Substitute Teacher is a full-time, 10-month instructional professional responsible for providing high-quality classroom instruction and maintaining continuity of learning during teacher absences. Building Substitute is a permanent member of the Urban Pathways instructional team and may be assigned to any classroom, grade level, or instructional support assignment based on school needs.
The Building Substitute supports the school's mission by delivering engaging instruction, maintaining a positive learning environment, implementing lesson plans, reinforcing school-wide expectations, and building positive relationships with scholars and staff. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and a commitment to ensuring every scholar receives consistent, high-quality instruction each day.
The Building Substitute reports to the assigned School Leader or Assistant Principal and is expected to actively participate in the life of the school community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom instruction in accordance with teacher lesson plans and curriculum expectations.
- Maintain continuity of instruction during teacher absences.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the academic needs of diverse learners.
- Support implementation of the school's instructional model and academic priorities.
- Facilitate whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction.
- Administer classroom assessments as directed.
- Monitor student understanding and provide feedback.
- Utilize classroom technology and instructional resources effectively.
- Ensure instructional time is maximized throughout the school day.
Classroom Management
- Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
- Implement school-wide behavior expectations and classroom management systems consistently.
- Reinforce Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practices.
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students at all times.
- Address behavioral concerns promptly and professionally.
- Document significant behavioral incidents as required.
Student Support
- Foster positive relationships with scholars.
- Encourage student engagement and participation.
- Support students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development.
- Provide accommodations outlined in student IEPs, 504 Plans, or behavior support plans under the guidance of classroom teachers and support staff.
- Refer student concerns to appropriate administrators when necessary.
School Operations
The Building Substitute may also be assigned to:
- Intervention groups
- Small group instruction
- Classroom support
- Testing support
- Arrival and dismissal duties
- Lunch or recess supervision
- Coverage during professional development
- Special school events
- Temporary long-term classroom assignments
- Other instructional duties as assigned by administration
Assignments may vary daily depending upon operational needs.
Collaboration
- Collaborate professionally with classroom teachers, administrators, interventionists, and support staff.
- Participate in faculty meetings and professional development.
- Communicate effectively regarding classroom activities and student concerns.
- Leave accurate notes for classroom teachers following substitute assignments.
- Support school initiatives and instructional goals.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and personnel.
- Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, communication, and conduct.
- Report to work punctually and maintain reliable attendance.
- Follow all school procedures, policies, and emergency protocols.
- Complete required trainings and compliance requirements.
- Maintain appropriate professional certifications.
Physical Requirements
The employee must regularly:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Sit, bend, reach, and lift instructional materials up to 25 pounds.
- Supervise students indoors and outdoors.
- Move throughout the school building multiple times daily.
- Use computers and instructional technology.
- Respond quickly during emergency situations.
