Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Laser Systems
US citizenship required. Foreign nationals need not apply.
Company: Spectral Energies, LLC
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Full-Time
Spectral Energies is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to design, analyze, and develop robust mechanical systems for advanced laser platforms supporting government, defense, and research applications.
This position focuses on the design of precision mechanical hardware, including structural assemblies, optical mounts, enclosures, thermal management systems, cooling systems, and support equipment. The successful candidate will develop designs that are reliable, manufacturable, maintainable, and capable of operating in demanding laboratory and field environments.
The Mechanical Design Engineer will collaborate with other mechanical, electrical, and optical engineers throughout the design, fabrication, integration, and testing process to develop high-performance laser systems. This role is focused on mechanical engineering while providing the opportunity to contribute to complete laser system development as part of an experienced engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Design precision mechanical components, assemblies, optical mounts, enclosures, cooling systems, and support structures for advanced laser platforms.
- Develop 3D models, detailed engineering drawings, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, and bills of materials using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Perform engineering analyses related to structural integrity, heat transfer, thermal management, fluid flow, vibration, and mechanical performance.
- Design liquid and air-cooled thermal management systems for high-power laser equipment.
- Develop mechanical designs that emphasize reliability, precision, manufacturability, maintainability, and ease of assembly.
- Collaborate with other mechanical, electrical, and optical engineers to integrate mechanical hardware into complete laser systems.
- Support prototype fabrication, assembly, integration, laboratory testing, and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate with vendors and machine shops to manufacture custom mechanical components.
- Prepare engineering documentation, design reports, test procedures, and technical reports.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Five or more years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Strong mechanical design and engineering drawing skills.
- Strong understanding of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and structural mechanics.
- Experience designing precision mechanical systems, thermal systems, cooling systems, or fluid-handling systems.
- Hands-on experience with prototype development, mechanical assembly, system integration, and troubleshooting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:
- Laser systems, electro-optical systems, or precision opto-mechanical assemblies.
- Government, defense, aerospace, or advanced research and development programs.
- Thermal analysis, cooling system design, CFD, or finite element analysis (FEA).
- Precision mechanical design for optical or laser applications.
- Laboratory testing and engineering documentation.
- Experience preparing mechanical drawings, fabrication drawings, and test documentation.
- Experience supporting government, defense, aerospace, or research-and-development programs.
Candidates who possess many, but not all, of the preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanical engineer with strong design skills who enjoys developing robust, precision mechanical hardware for demanding engineering applications. The successful candidate is comfortable taking designs from initial concept through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, and laboratory testing. They have a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles and enjoy solving problems involving structural design, thermal management, precision assemblies, and manufacturable hardware. Success in this role comes from producing well-engineered mechanical designs while working effectively with other mechanical, electrical, and optical engineers to develop complete laser
systems.
