American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center

A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation; floating may occur to any like unit or patient location (MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds)

Units covered include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds)

Patient populations vary by unit and include general/vascular surgery, neuro (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, orthopedics, urology, ENT, and more

Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit and staffing mix

Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week
-
Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month

No on-call responsibilities

EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs
-
Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available

Active AL RN license or compact RN license (can submit pending with ETA)

Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS

Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg nursing experience required
-
At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required
-
Proficiency in a broad range of clinical skills including wound care, chest tubes, NGT, trach care, PEG tubes, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, colostomy/ostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, CVL dressing changes, and Foley care

Chemo administration certification highly preferred for oncology unit coverage

Cerner EMR experience preferred

Ability to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings

One reference from a charge nurse or above from within the past 12 months required for consideration

SSN and DOB (day and month) required for consideration

Copy of current certifications required for consideration

Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position

First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience

Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler

New travelers to the facility or those who have been away for 1 or more years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for rehires is determined based on last date worked

Unit support includes CNAs (1:6), a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse (rarely takes assignment), phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs

Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday assignments are not guaranteed prior to arrival

Blackout dates during which RTO is not approved include: 1/19–20, 2/13–16, entire month of March, 4/18–20, 5/10–12, 5/24–26, 6/14–16, 7/3–6, 8/30–9/1, 10/30–11/2, 11/26–30, and 12/21–1/1

Any scrub color is acceptable
