MDS Coordinator Job Description
Job Overview
The MDS Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of care provided to patients by overseeing the assessment process for the Minimum Data Set (MDS). This position requires a comprehensive understanding of clinical standards and regulations, as well as the ability to collaborate with various departments within the healthcare facility. The ideal candidate will have experience in critical care settings, such as PICU or Emergency Medicine, and possess strong skills in medical coding and utilization review.
Duties
- Conduct thorough assessments of patient data to complete MDS documentation accurately and timely.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Review clinical documentation for accuracy and completeness in accordance with established standards.
- Provide education and training to staff on MDS processes, coding requirements, and best practices.
- Monitor patient outcomes and quality indicators to identify areas for improvement.
- Participate in audits and reviews related to MDS submissions and coding practices.
- Stay updated on changes in regulations, coding standards (including ICD-9), and best practices related to MDS.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of MDS processes, critical care standards, and hospital operations.
- Proficiency in medical coding, particularly related to ICD-9 and utilization review.
- Experience working in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU), Operating Rooms (OR), or Emergency Medicine settings is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to analyze data and implement quality improvement initiatives based on findings.
