Bay Point Laboratories is seeking a Chemist to support laboratory testing operations within a regulated cannabis testing environment. This role is responsible for conducting analytical testing on customer-submitted samples in accordance with applicable state regulations, laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and quality management systems.
The Chemist will utilize analytical and wet chemistry techniques to generate accurate, reliable, and defensible data that directly supports product safety, regulatory compliance, and client decision-making. This position requires a high level of technical competency, attention to detail, and adherence to strict laboratory standards, including ISO 17025 and Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Analytical Testing & Laboratory Execution
The Chemist is responsible for performing analytical testing in accordance with laboratory methods, regulatory requirements, and quality standards. This includes:
- conducting routine and non-routine analytical testing of cannabis samples using validated methods;
- performing wet chemistry and instrumental analysis to support required testing panels;
- operating and maintaining laboratory instruments such as gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), spectrophotometers, ICP-MS, and related analytical equipment; and
- ensuring that all testing activities are performed in accordance with approved SOPs and method protocols.
Research, Method Support & Process Optimization
The Chemist supports laboratory development and continuous improvement initiatives by contributing to method development, validation, and optimization efforts. Responsibilities include:
- assisting in the development and refinement of analytical methods;
- identifying opportunities to improve testing efficiency, accuracy, and throughput;
- troubleshooting analytical issues and instrument performance concerns; and
- supporting internal projects related to process optimization and laboratory scalability.
Quality Control & Regulatory Compliance
The Chemist is responsible for maintaining strict adherence to laboratory quality standards and regulatory requirements. This includes:
- following Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), and ISO 17025 standards;
- ensuring all testing results meet internal quality control criteria and regulatory thresholds;
- participating in quality assurance activities such as calibration, validation, and proficiency testing; and
- supporting compliance with Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) testing requirements and reporting standards.
LIMS & Data Management
The Chemist is responsible for accurate and complete data entry and recordkeeping within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This includes:
- logging sample data, test results, and analytical observations;
- ensuring traceability and integrity of all data generated during testing;
- reviewing data for accuracy and completeness prior to release; and
- maintaining organized and audit-ready documentation in accordance with regulatory and internal requirements.
Laboratory Safety & Environment
The Chemist is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment. This includes:
- adhering to all laboratory safety protocols and chemical handling procedures;
- properly using personal protective equipment (PPE);
- maintaining a clean and orderly workspace; and
- identifying and reporting any safety hazards or incidents in accordance with laboratory policies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
The Chemist collaborates with laboratory personnel and cross-functional teams to support operational goals and ensure efficient workflow. This includes:
- coordinating with sample intake and operations teams to ensure proper sample handling and prioritization;
- communicating analytical findings and anomalies to management;
- supporting quality assurance and compliance teams during audits and inspections; and
- contributing to a collaborative and performance-driven team environment.
Required Qualifications
Candidates for the Chemist position must possess the educational background, technical expertise, and regulatory awareness necessary to perform laboratory testing in a compliance-driven environment. Specifically, candidates must:
- hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field;
- have hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an analytical testing environment;
- demonstrate strong knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques, including spectroscopy, chromatography (GC and HPLC), ICP-MS, and wet chemistry methods;
- have familiarity with ISO 17025 standards, Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) requirements, and laboratory safety regulations; and
- demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a structured laboratory setting.
Technical Skills & Competencies
The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in:
- operating analytical laboratory instruments, including chromatographs, spectrometers, and spectrophotometers;
- interpreting analytical data and troubleshooting inconsistencies;
- utilizing Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for data tracking and reporting; and
- maintaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail in all laboratory activities. Experience in microbiological testing is considered a plus but is not required.

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour
