JOB DESCRIPTION
Clinic Assistant
Reports to: Clinic Manager
General Overview: Clinic Assistant serves as a backup for the Clinic Manager in his/her absence. Assists with the operations of the shelter facility relevant to animal issues when working in the surgical center or assisting with veterinary procedures.
Because this is a frontline staff position working closely with staff, volunteers and the public, must maintain a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere that reflects professionalism and commitment to support the work of staff and volunteers.
Major Responsibilities – Clinic Assistant
- Responsible for assisting in clinic including restraint, induction, intubation, surgical prep, x rays, and monitoring.
- Prepares animals and instruments for surgery.
- Properly handles and records usage of controlled substances and aids in the maintenance of proper surgical and medical records in the absence of the Clinic Manager.
- Monitor surgical inventory and ensures equipment is in proper working condition.
- Cleaning duties, including properly cleaning surgical instruments and preparing surgical packs.
- Observes and evaluates animals for signs of illness and reports symptoms to appropriate personnel.
- Performs basic laboratory tests and procedures, administers medications and supports euthanasia certified staff with euthanasia.
- Performs continual maintenance on clinic equipment including autoclaves, lab machines, ultrasonic, anesthesia machines, etc.
- Assists with data entry and collecting key performance indicators.
- Assists with cleaning animal holding areas, x-ray, surgical suite, surgical prep, etc.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Skills
Good organizational skills; attention to detail; self-motivated; skills with animal first aid, supports certified staff with performing euthanasia, basic laboratory techniques and basic animal grooming techniques; ability to temperament test animals; ability to identify animal species, breeds, ages and sexes; ability to identify signs of animal illness and injuries; good communication skills – verbal and written; team player; ability to work with data base and maintain records; ability to work well with broad spectrum of the community; good sense of humor.
All employees must be able to provide their own transportation to and from work.
Availability to work a flexible work schedule including weekends.
Must be able to manage heavy weight up to and sometimes exceeding 50 lbs.
Hours: 30 – 40 hours per week for full time
Classification: Shelter Support – Non-Exempt
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
