Position Summary
King Cable Construction is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Underground Missile Bore Worker to join our underground construction team. This position assists with the setup and operation of pneumatic missile-boring equipment used to install conduit, innerduct, cable, and other underground utility infrastructure.
The employee will work closely with the Underground Foreman and other crew members to prepare launch and receiving pits, align boring equipment, complete underground crossings, install conduit, restore work areas, and maintain tools and equipment. The ideal candidate is comfortable performing physical outdoor work, following safety procedures, and working around active construction zones and existing utilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the setup, alignment, launch, operation, reversal, and retrieval of pneumatic missile-boring equipment.
- Prepare launch and receiving pits at the proper location, depth, and angle.
- Help complete underground bores beneath roads, driveways, sidewalks, parking areas, and landscaped surfaces.
- Install conduit, innerduct, pull rope, tracer wire, cable, and related underground materials.
- Connect, inspect, and safely handle air hoses, compressors, lubricators, fittings, boring heads, and other pneumatic equipment.
- Measure bore distances, verify depths, and help maintain the correct bore path.
- Read and follow construction prints, route maps, work orders, utility markings, and instructions from the Foreman.
- Verify that utility-locate markings and required documentation are present before digging or boring begins.
- Assist with potholing or daylighting existing utilities as directed.
- Stop work and immediately notify the Foreman when utility markings are unclear, unexpected facilities are discovered, or unsafe conditions exist.
- Operate hand tools, pneumatic tools, compactors, pumps, and other construction equipment when trained and authorized.
- Assist with excavation, trench preparation, conduit placement, backfilling, compaction, and site restoration.
- Load, secure, transport, unload, and organize tools, conduit, equipment, and construction materials.
- Inspect equipment before and after use and report damage, wear, leaks, or mechanical problems.
- Perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on missile-boring equipment and accessories.
- Set up and maintain barricades, cones, signs, and other traffic-control devices as directed.
- Keep the work zone clean, organized, and free of unnecessary hazards.
- Record completed footage, installed materials, bore locations, equipment use, and other production information.
- Communicate clearly with the Foreman, equipment operator, spotters, and other crew members throughout the bore.
- Follow all King Cable Construction safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable construction regulations.
- Perform other underground construction duties as assigned.
OSHA requires employers to determine the estimated location of underground installations before excavation begins and to use safe means to determine exact locations as work approaches existing utilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
- Previous underground utility, cable, telecommunications, excavation, or construction experience is preferred.
- Missile-boring or pneumatic-piercing experience is strongly preferred but not required for an entry-level crew position.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read basic construction prints, measurements, utility markings, and work orders.
- Willingness to learn safe missile-boring procedures and underground utility installation methods.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a construction crew.
- Strong attention to safety, equipment condition, and surrounding job-site conditions.
- Dependable attendance and ability to report to changing job locations on time.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
- Ability to pass any pre-employment screening required by company policy and applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating or assisting with pneumatic missile-boring equipment.
- Experience installing telecommunications, fiber-optic, electrical, or cable conduit.
- Knowledge of utility-locate colors, markings, and one-call documentation.
- Experience with potholing, trenching, conduit installation, compaction, and restoration.
- OSHA 10-hour Construction certification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Traffic-control or flagger certification.
- Commercial driver’s license, depending on assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Experience operating mini excavators, trenchers, skid steers, vacuum excavators, or compactors.
Required Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate should be able to:
- Recognize common underground-construction hazards.
- Follow excavation, trench, and utility-exposure procedures.
- Maintain proper alignment between launch and receiving points.
- Use measuring tapes, grade rods, levels, hand tools, and basic construction equipment.
- Safely handle pressurized hoses and pneumatic equipment.
- Understand the importance of utility clearances and bore-path verification.
- Communicate effectively with spotters and equipment operators.
- Identify equipment problems and report them before operation.
- Work efficiently without sacrificing safety or installation quality.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with reasonable accommodation where required, including:
- Frequently standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working at ground level.
- Entering and exiting launch or receiving areas only when permitted and properly protected.
- Using shovels, digging bars, compactors, and other construction tools for extended periods.
- Frequently lifting and carrying materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Moving heavier equipment or materials with assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Working around vibration, loud equipment, dust, mud, and pressurized air systems.
- Maintaining balance and mobility on uneven, wet, muddy, or sloped terrain.
- Wearing required personal protective equipment throughout the workday.
Work Environment
This position is primarily performed outdoors at active construction sites. Employees may be exposed to:
- Heat, cold, rain, wind, and changing weather conditions
- Mud, dust, dirt, noise, vibration, and construction debris
- Vehicle and pedestrian traffic
- Uneven terrain and open excavations
- Heavy equipment and moving machinery
- Existing underground and overhead utilities
- Early morning, evening, weekend, or overtime work
- Travel between job sites within the company’s service area
Safety Responsibilities
Every Underground Missile Bore Worker is expected to:
- Attend daily job briefings and safety meetings.
- Review the planned bore path and known utility locations before beginning work.
- Wear required personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, safety-toe boots, and hearing protection where required.
- Never enter an unprotected excavation or trench.
- Follow the instructions of the designated competent person regarding excavation and trench safety.
- Keep body parts away from pressurized hoses, moving equipment, and pinch points.
- Never operate equipment without proper training and authorization.
- Report injuries, utility contacts, near misses, damaged equipment, and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Exercise stop-work authority when conditions appear unsafe.
OSHA’s excavation requirements address utility locations, safe access, protective systems, inspections, and other controls for trenching and excavation work.
