SUMMARY
Primarily responsible for the installation of new and replacement HVAC and refrigeration equipment in the commercial industry, including: package units, split systems, ductless split (mini-split) systems, and some commercial refrigeration equipment. Responsibilities include setting and rigging equipment, refrigerant piping and line sets, electrical connections, condensate and ductwork transitions, and system startup. When not installing equipment, the installer will perform HVAC&R preventative maintenance (PMs) on commercial equipment.
HVAC ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Understands basic refrigeration cycle to include: identifying components in the refrigeration circuit, understanding how each component works, and using a manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature chart, and temperature measuring devices to perform proper system startup and PMs. Understands refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and charging, as well as brazing and leak-testing refrigerant lines.
- Understands basic electrical theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits, and series and parallel circuits. Ability to read basic wiring diagrams and make correct line- and low-voltage connections during installation. Understanding of Ohms Law. Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current, and resistance values, and to verify proper operation at startup.
- Understands the proper setting, rigging, and mounting of equipment — including rooftop package units, curbs and curb adapters, ground-mount and pad-set condensing units, and indoor air handlers — with attention to safe lifting, leveling, and securing of equipment.
- Understands the process of treating air so as to simultaneously control its temperature, humidity, and distribution, including proper ductwork transitions, line set routing, condensate drainage, and airflow considerations to ensure the installed system performs as designed.
