We are seeking a hands-on Microelectronics Process Engineer with a mechanical engineering background to develop, improve, and support die bonding and wire bonding processes.
Position Summary
The Microelectronics Process Engineer will work directly with production equipment, materials, customer drawings, and engineering teams to develop robust assembly processes for high-mix, low-to-medium-volume programs.
This position is well suited for an engineer who enjoys working on the manufacturing floor, solving practical technical problems, and translating customer requirements into repeatable processes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize die bonding and wire bonding processes.
- Set up and operate die bonders, wire bonders, plasma cleaning systems, dispensing equipment, and related assembly tools.
- Support epoxy, eutectic, solder, and other die-attach processes.
- Develop processes for gold and aluminum wire bonding, including wedge, ball, ribbon, and heavy-wire applications where applicable.
- Evaluate bond quality through pull testing, shear testing, visual inspection, and process data.
- Review customer drawings, material specifications, assembly instructions, and acceptance criteria.
- Create process travelers, work instructions, setup sheets, and engineering documentation.
- Design or improve tooling, fixtures, nests, vacuum pickups, and mechanical interfaces.
- Troubleshoot equipment, materials, placement, adhesion, contamination, and bond-integrity issues.
- Perform root-cause investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Work with customers on design-for-manufacturability recommendations.
- Support prototype builds, process transfers, production ramp-up, and continuous-improvement activities.
- Train technicians and production personnel on approved manufacturing processes.
- Maintain compliance with quality, safety, traceability, and documentation requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Hands-on engineering experience in microelectronics assembly, semiconductor packaging, electronics manufacturing, or precision manufacturing.
- Experience with die bonding, wire bonding, or both is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of mechanical tolerances, tooling, fixtures, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, assembly drawings, and technical specifications.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and analytical skills.
- Comfortable working in a production and cleanroom environment.
- Ability to manage multiple customer programs in a high-mix manufacturing environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience
- Epoxy, eutectic, solder, silver-sinter, or thermocompression die-attach processes.
- Gold ball bonding, aluminum wedge bonding, ribbon bonding, or heavy-wire bonding.
- Flip chip, underfill, encapsulation, plasma cleaning, or vacuum reflow.
- Bond pull and die shear testing.
- Design of fixtures and tooling using CAD software such as SolidWorks.
- Process validation, statistical process control, design of experiments, or capability studies.
- Experience working under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ITAR, IPC, or MIL-STD requirements.
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, medical, photonics, RF, power-electronics, or semiconductor customers.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize microelectronics fabrication processes, including lithography, etching, deposition, and packaging techniques.
- Conduct root cause analysis on process deviations or defects to identify underlying issues and implement corrective actions.
- Utilize CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, and Schematics tools to create detailed process layouts and schematics for process equipment and tooling.
- Program and troubleshoot industrial automation systems including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and robot programming for manufacturing automation.
- Apply lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies to improve process efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
- Perform engineering data analysis using statistical tools to monitor process performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration with design engineers, quality teams, and production staff to implement process improvements in a manufacturing environment.
- Manage project scheduling for process development initiatives while ensuring timely completion of milestones.
- Support factory operations by providing technical troubleshooting for process equipment such as welding systems, vision inspection systems, and plastics injection molding machinery.
- Develop detailed process documentation including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), schematics, and engineering drawings for manufacturing procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field; advanced degrees preferred.
- Proven experience practicing in an industrial or manufacturing engineering role within a high-tech or semiconductor environment.
- Strong knowledge of process engineering concepts including process improvement techniques like Lean management and Six Sigma manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo) for designing schematics and layouts.
- Proficiency in industrial automation systems such as PLC programming and robot programming.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as plastics injection molding, welding, assembly line operations, and vision inspection systems.
- Skilled in engineering troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and implementing quality improvement programs in engineering settings.
- Experience managing projects related to process development or factory automation with excellent project scheduling skills.
- Ability to analyze complex engineering data to drive continuous improvement initiatives effectively.
