Position Overview:
PS188K School for the Arts is seeking an energetic, creative, and student-centered Full-Time Dance Teacher to join our vibrant arts community for the 2025–2026 school year. The successful candidate will provide engaging dance and creative movement instruction for students in 3K through Grade 5 while fostering creativity, self-expression, physical wellness, and an appreciation for the performing arts. As a member of our arts-focused school community, the Dance Teacher will design standards-based lessons aligned to the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, collaborate with fellow arts educators and classroom teachers, and create meaningful performance opportunities that celebrate student learning and artistic growth.
Key Responsibilities: Instruction & Classroom Environment:
- Plan and deliver engaging dance and creative movement instruction for students in 3K through Grade 5.
- Develop standards-aligned lessons that promote creativity, artistic expression, collaboration, and physical literacy.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that encourages participation from all students.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
- Integrate movement, rhythm, choreography, and performance techniques into developmentally appropriate lessons.
- Maintain classroom routines and behavior expectations that support student success and active engagement.
Collaboration & School Community:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, fellow arts educators, and school leadership to support interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Partner with the school's arts team to strengthen the school's vision as a School for the Arts.
- Plan and coordinate student performances, assemblies, showcases, and school-wide arts celebrations.
- Provide professional learning and movement-based instructional support to staff as appropriate.
- Engage families through performances, workshops, and community arts events.
- Participate in school committees, faculty meetings, professional development, and other assigned school activities.
Assessment & Program Management:
- Monitor student progress through ongoing observation and performance-based assessments.
- Maintain accurate student records and use assessment data to inform instruction.
- Order, organize, and maintain dance materials, equipment, costumes, and instructional resources.
- Ensure instructional practices align with the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and NYC Public Schools expectations.
- Participate in quarterly student, family, and/or staff engagement activities before, during, or after school.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Valid New York State certification in Dance Education or Physical Education.
- Knowledge of the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.
- Demonstrated experience delivering engaging whole-group and small-group dance instruction.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Satisfactory attendance and punctuality record.
- Evidence of effective classroom instruction aligned with New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.
Preferred:
- Experience teaching dance or creative movement in an elementary school setting.
- Experience planning school performances and arts-based events.
- Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive instructional strategies.
- Prior NYC Public Schools teaching experience.
- Highly Effective or Effective ADVANCE ratings.
