This position is responsible for receiving, evaluating, and disseminating calls for police and emergency services.
- Answers administrative and emergency administrative calls from the general public, gathers incident information and dispatches appropriate emergency safety personnel such as police, fire department, or ambulance.
- Prioritizes calls based on urgency.
- Maintains telephone contact with callers during dangerous situations.
- Tracks the status of police officers regarding availability and location.
- Provides information to police regarding outstanding warrants/wanted persons, suspect/subject data. Department of revenue driver and vehicle information from computer databases during traffic stops and complaint investigations.
- Monitors multiple radio channels.
- Informs or confirms relevant information with officers
- Relays information to other law enforcement agencies via computer and radio.
- Dispatches personnel from towing companies, public works personnel and other agencies.
- Maintains knowledge of emergency communication devices, including Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf, procedures, ordinances and statutes, regional geography, and sources of emergency response resources and information.
- Updates computer-aided dispatch information.
- Takes and relays messages to officers. Connects officers to outside telephone lines. Answers informational calls from the public. Locates addresses and numbers for police. Maintains files for wanted persons, stolen articles/vehicles, missing persons.
- Monitors security and building control devices.
- Monitors individuals in holding cells, booking rooms, and sallyport for conduct, safety, medical or other needs.
The need to perform multiple tasks at the same time and in stressful situations.
- Knowledge of communications equipment and technology.
- Knowledge of the Police Department, Highway Patrol, and other emergency service providers.
- Skill in entering data rapidly and accurately.
- Skill in using various types of communications equipment.
- Skill in using standard office equipment.
