Position Summary
The Setup Operator/Manual Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining manual production machinery to manufacture precision machined components. This position requires expertise in machine setup, tooling selection, process optimization, quality inspection, and production support for a variety of machining equipment including bar feeders, chucking lathes, automatic bar machines, and five-spindle lathes.
Essential Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual machining equipment to produce parts according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Perform complete machine setups, including tooling installation, adjustments, and program verification.
- Operate and troubleshoot:
- Bar Feeders
- Chucking Lathes
- Automatic Bar Machines
- Five-Spindle Lathes
- Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, process sheets, and engineering drawings.
- Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, cams, guides, and machine components.
- Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and production efficiency.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments.
- Identify and correct machining, tooling, and setup issues to minimize downtime and scrap.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and lubrication according to established schedules.
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of setup and machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience setting up and operating:
- Bar feeder machines
- Chucking lathes
- Automatic bar machines
- Five-spindle lathes
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings.
- Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, feeds, speeds, and tolerances.
- Proficiency using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, indicators, thread gauges, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently perform machine setups and changeovers.
- Knowledge of multi-spindle machining processes.
- Ability to maintain close tolerances and quality standards.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds throughout the shift.
- Ability to work around moving machinery, cutting tools, oils, coolants, and manufacturing equipment.
- Manual dexterity required for handling tools, measuring instruments, and machine adjustments.
Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
