Position Title: Hall Monitor / School Support Assistant

Work Schedule: 8 AM-4 PM, Monday through Friday
Position Summary
The Hall Monitor/School Support Assistant provides general student supervision and building support to help maintain a safe, orderly, clean, and welcoming school environment. The position is student-facing and assists with student arrival and dismissal, hallway supervision, playground set-up and clean-up, basic first aid, light custodial duties, some school supply management, lost and found, and communication of building needs to school administration.
The successful candidate will be dependable, attentive, calm, approachable, and comfortable working with students of different ages. The position requires good judgment, the ability to respond appropriately to routine student needs and minor incidents, and a willingness to assist wherever needed to support the school's daily operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Supervision and Safety
- Supervise students in hallways, common areas, playground areas, and other designated locations as assigned.
- Monitor student movement through the building and help maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful school environment in accordance with school policies and approaches.
- Assist with student arrival and dismissal, including meeting students at designated drop-off and pick-up locations and safely escorting or directing students to and from their classrooms.
- Assist students who need help locating classrooms, offices, restrooms, or other areas of the school.
- Follow school policies and procedures concerning student supervision, safety, emergency response, and reporting of incidents.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and school matters.
Playground Set-Up and Clean-Up
- Set up and put away playground equipment and materials as needed.
- Inspect playground areas for obvious hazards, debris, or unsafe conditions and promptly report concerns to the appropriate administrator.
- Assist with maintaining orderly and clean playground areas.
- Help ensure playground equipment and materials are returned to their designated locations.
First Aid and Student Care
- Provide basic first aid within the scope of training and school procedures.
- Respond to minor student injuries and illnesses and obtain assistance from appropriate school personnel when necessary.
- Maintain and restock basic first-aid supplies as directed.
- Document or communicate student injuries or incidents in accordance with school procedures.
- Contact or notify the appropriate staff member when a student's condition requires additional attention.
Hallway and Building Upkeep
- Maintain clean, orderly, and welcoming hallways and common areas.
- Perform light janitorial duties, such as picking up litter, wiping down surfaces, cleaning minor spills, and addressing routine cleanliness needs.
- Report spills, damage, maintenance issues, safety hazards, or other building concerns promptly.
- Assist with moving, organizing, or setting up materials, furniture, or equipment as needed.
- Help maintain common areas in a condition that supports student safety and school operations.
- Perform other light custodial or building-support tasks within the scope of the position.
Supplies and Inventory
- Monitor commonly used school, classroom, playground, first-aid, and building supplies.
- Restock supplies in designated locations.
- Notify the appropriate administrator when supplies are running low or need to be ordered.
- Assist with organizing storage areas and maintaining an orderly inventory of commonly used materials.
- Organize lost and found items daily to facilitate identification and return to students or families.
Communication and Building Support
- Communicate building, safety, cleanliness, supply, and maintenance needs to the administrator or designated staff member.
- Identify and promptly report conditions that may pose a safety concern.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and helpful presence when interacting with students, staff, families, and visitors.
Other Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned that support the safe and effective operation of the school.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist with unexpected or changing school needs.
- Perform duties in accordance with school policies, applicable laws and regulations, and established safety procedures.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent, or ability to meet applicable school requirements.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check that allows working in a school environment.
- Ability to work effectively and appropriately with children in a school environment.
- Ability to maintain active supervision of students and respond appropriately to safety concerns.
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other staff.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established school procedures.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, and moving light equipment and supplies.
- Current first-aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
Preferred
- Previous experience working with children in a school, childcare, camp, recreation, or similar setting.
- Experience with student supervision, school operations, custodial support, or facilities upkeep.
Physical Requirements
The position requires regular standing and walking throughout the school building and grounds. The employee may be required to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, climb stairs, lift and carry supplies or equipment, and respond promptly to student or building needs. The employee must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position involves frequent interaction with students and staff and may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, routine cleaning materials, and spills or messes.
