Ask an accomplished musician where they grew the most, and they'll point to a room — a place where the teaching was exceptional and the musicians around them refused to settle.
At William Pu Music Academy, that room is simply the standard. WPMA is a pre-college, conservatory-style academy in Alpharetta, just north of Atlanta, and one of the leading programs of its kind in the Southeast. Our students account for one of the largest shares of any single academy in Georgia's All-State and youth-orchestra seats. They hold leadership chairs in NYO, NYO2, the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, and GMEA All-State; they win prizes in state, national, and international competitions; many of our students have gone on to conservatories such as Juilliard, Peabody, the Jacobs School, New England Conservatory, and the San Francisco Conservatory, and to universities including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, and Duke.
We are expanding our theory and musicianship faculty, and we are looking for teachers who want to do their best work alongside some of the finest young musicians and teaching faculty in the state.
WHO THRIVES HERE
The teachers who flourish at WPMA share a conviction: that rhythm, ear-training, and a fluency with music theory and notation are the foundation that great musicianship and playing is built upon — not an afterthought. They take real satisfaction in the moment a student stops counting the beat and begins to feel it, or finally hears the interval they couldn't hear the week before. They are accomplished musicians in their own right, and they are still eager to grow — because they understand that the best teachers are formed in the company of other excellent teachers.
If that describes you, we would like to meet you.
WHAT YOU'LL TEACH
You will lead our theory & aural skills classes — the coursework where students build the ear, the sense of rhythm, and the theoretical foundation that make everything else possible: the auditions, the competitions, the recitals, the acceptances.
- You'll teach small classes — roughly five students today, growing to eight to twelve as the program expands — small enough to reach every student, and large enough to build genuine momentum in the room.
- You'll teach from a curriculum we developed in-house, one that goes deep on perfecting rhythm and ear training, with music theory woven throughout. You won't be improvising a syllabus; you'll be entrusted with a proven method and shown precisely how to deliver it.
- You'll be trained by one of our master theory teachers, learning our approach directly from someone who has already mastered it — so you begin with confidence rather than guesswork.
You bring the musicianship and the care for students. We provide the curriculum, the training, and the students.
ROOM TO GROW
Teachers who excel in the theory & aural skills classroom may invited to teach privately as well — in music theory and/or composition. It means additional hours, one-on-one work with serious and motivated students, and a deeper role within the academy.
It isn't something you apply for. It's something you earn through excellence in the classroom — and we make certain the opportunity is there for those who do.
COMPENSATION & COMMITMENT
- $40–$60 per hour, commensurate with experience.
- Part-time and full-time positions available — tell us what you're looking for, and we'll build the right role around the right person.
- Times of teaching will be during after-school hours on weekdays and all-day on weekends.
- Ongoing training and a genuine path toward private teaching in theory or composition.
- A place among one of the strongest communities of student musicians and faculty in the state.
THE BACKGROUND THAT FITS
- Strong musicianship, with the ability to demonstrate and particular command of rhythm and ear training.
- A solid grounding in music theory; experience with composition is a welcome plus.
- Teaching experience with motivated students — or the ability and drive to become an exceptional teacher quickly.
- A coachable spirit. You'll be trained in our methods, and the finest teachers are always the ones still eager to learn.
- Warmth, reliability, and a real enthusiasm for working with pre-college-level young musicians.
