Job Summary
Seafood Center is a family-owned neighborhood seafood market specializing in fresh fish, live seafood, and professionally prepared seafood products.
We are hiring a dependable and customer-focused Seafood Counter Associate / Fish Cutter to help customers at our fresh and live seafood counters. This is an active, hands-on position that combines customer service, live seafood handling, fish cutting and processing, product preparation, cleaning, and general seafood-department support.
The right candidate will be comfortable working directly with seafood, using knives and processing equipment, communicating with customers, and maintaining a clean and organized work area. Previous fish-cutting, meat-cutting, seafood, restaurant, or grocery experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers and provide friendly, attentive service.
- Help customers select fresh fish, live seafood, shellfish, and other seafood products.
- Retrieve and safely handle live seafood from the store’s tanks.
- Weigh, price, package, and label customer orders accurately.
- Scale, gut, clean, fillet, steak, portion, and prepare fish according to customer requests.
- Use knives, cutting tools, scales, sinks, and seafood-processing equipment safely.
- Explain available seafood products and basic preparation options to customers.
- Keep fresh seafood displays stocked, organized, properly iced, and presentable.
- Monitor the appearance and condition of seafood products and live seafood tanks.
- Receive, inspect, and properly store incoming seafood deliveries.
- Rotate inventory and follow first-in, first-out procedures.
- Maintain proper seafood temperatures and follow food-safety procedures.
- Clean and sanitize knives, cutting boards, equipment, counters, floors, sinks, tanks, and work areas.
- Remove waste and maintain a clean, safe, and organized seafood department.
- Support coworkers during busy periods and complete other store duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous fish-cutting, seafood, meat-cutting, grocery, restaurant, or food-preparation experience is preferred.
- Strong customer-service and communication skills.
- Comfortable handling fresh fish, shellfish, and live seafood.
- Comfortable using sharp knives and seafood-processing equipment.
- Able to follow food-safety, sanitation, and workplace-safety procedures.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work well as part of a small team.
- Able to remain organized and accurate in a fast-paced environment.
- Willing to clean throughout the shift and maintain high sanitation standards.
- Able to stand for extended periods and work in wet, cold, and refrigerated environments.
- Able to bend, reach, carry, and lift up to [40–50] pounds safely.
- Available to work [weekends, mornings, holidays, or other required shifts].
Preferred Experience
- Fish cutting or filleting: 1 year
- Seafood counter or grocery experience: 1 year
- Food handling or food preparation: 1 year
- Customer service: 1 year
- Experience handling live seafood is a plus.
