GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for maintaining safety, security, and order within correctional facilities. This role involves supervising inmates, enforcing rules and regulations, preventing disturbances, and ensuring the safety of both staff and incarcerated individuals. The Corrections Officer plays a critical role in the justice system by supporting rehabilitation efforts and maintaining a secure environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides overall jail security, maintaining the safety and welfare of inmates.
· Performs booking and release of inmates; prepares and maintains daily reports.
· Conduct routine inspections of cells, common areas, and facility grounds to detect and prevent contraband, breaches, or unsafe conditions.
· Respond to emergencies, disturbances, or incidents, ensuring the safety of inmates and staff.
· Monitors inmates, radio, control panel board; answers the telephone.
· Performs general housekeeping of the jail facility; prepares meals.
· De-escalate conflicts and mediate disputes among inmates.
· Administers inmate medications; provides laundry and linen exchange; distributes purchased commissary items and mail.
· Adhere to all laws, regulations, and facility policies regarding the treatment and handling of inmates.
· Participate in ongoing training related to security practices, crisis response, and conflict resolution.
· Performs related duties as required
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
· High school graduate or equivalent experience and/or related education and at least eighteen (18) years of age.
· Working knowledge of jail facility operations.
· Skilled in use of computer, copier, breathalyzer, radio and other equipment used by Corrections Officers.
· Good communication skills and the ability to effectively work with inmates, their families and general public.
· Ability to handle emergency situations and exercise good judgment.
· 136-Hour Corrections Officer Certification.
· Maintain employee morale.
