Full-Time - 8 Hour Shifts (On Call When Needed)
SALARY:
$18.937/hour - $39,389.28/year
Negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience

JOB SUMMARY:
The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work operating a variety of heavy and specialized equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, stormwater systems, rights‑of‑way, parks, cemeteries, and other municipal infrastructure. This position requires sound judgment, safe work practices, and the ability to perform manual labor as needed to support Public Works operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, loaders, skid steers, graders, dump trucks, rollers, and related machinery.
- Performs trenching, grading, excavation, material loading, debris removal, and site preparation tasks.
- Operates equipment for stormwater system maintenance, including ditching, culvert cleaning, and sediment removal.
- Conducts right‑of‑way vegetation cutback using mechanical equipment.
- Transports equipment using a trailer and ensure proper load securement.
Maintenance & Safety
- Performs daily inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Reports mechanical issues promptly and coordinates with Fleet Maintenance for service.
- Follows all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and traffic control procedures.
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and required certifications.
Public Works Operations
- Assists with road repairs, asphalt patching, gravel placement, and drainage improvements.
- Supports storm response, debris removal, and emergency operations as needed.
- Performs manual labor such as shoveling, raking, lifting, and site cleanup.
- Completes work orders, logs, and documentation accurately and on time.
- Interact professionally with the public, contractors, and other city staff.
Minimum Qualifications (Applicants must meet minimum qualifications)
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3 Years experience operating heavy equipment in construction, and/or 1 years’ experience operating heavy equipment under a Public Works municipality.
- Valid Georgia Driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in municipal public works or utility operations.
- Valid Georgia Class A,B CDL or ability to obtain
- Training or certification in trench safety, flagging, confined space, or erosion control.
- Experience with stormwater infrastructure maintenance.
Physical Requirements
- Demonstrate the ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Work in outdoor environments including heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain, and noisy conditions.
- Demonstrate the ability to sit, stand, bend, climb, and operate equipment for extended periods.
Work Environment
- Work is performed outdoors and in equipment cabs.
- Exposure to traffic, dust, noise, and heavy machinery.
- May require overtime, on‑call duty, and emergency response.
