This position is responsible for leading, overseeing and participating in a variety of skilled and semiskilled labor duties in the maintenance and care of City owned trees, oversees assigned tree projects, plants, inspects, prunes, trims and removes trees under the guidance of the Engineering Maintenance Manager.
Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards
- Participates in the development and implementation of goals and procedures for tree maintenance and operations.
- Participates and assists in the operations and daily data entry of the city's tree inventory.
- Estimates time, materials and equipment required for the jobs assigned, requisitions materials as required.
- Determines trees to be removed by city crews or by contactors.
- Oversees Contractor's work performed on city contracts.
- Oversees notification of residents regarding tree and landscape projects in their neighborhood and 1 responds to customer service complaints.
- Ensures adherence to current safe work practices and procedures related to tree maintenance activities including electrical hazard awareness.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Requirements:
Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in maintaining, removing, trimming, and caring for trees, landscape, and related equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to lead, supervise and train subordinate personnel.
- Knowledge of safe work practices.
- Knowledge of the uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment used in the area of work assigned.
- Demonstrated knowledge of preventative Maintenance techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in tree maintenance.
- Knowledge of advanced safety procedures, including electrical hazard awareness and aerial rescue.
- Knowledge of traffic control procedures, including the placement of cones and warning signs.
- Knowledge of hazardous chemicals, herbicides and fertilizer
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform physical responsibilities associated with assigned duties.
Certification: Must possess or can obtain an Arborist certification from the International Society of Arboriculture with in twelve (12) months.
Licensing: Must possess a valid state operator/driver's license for the type of vehicle operated with a good driving history.

- Physical Abilities: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
- Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
- Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
