Full Job Description
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing ongoing support for the individuals served by Elite Disability Services of Nebraska (EDS). They are tasked with a variety of duties related to the overall care of individuals with developmental disabilities who live in a group home, independent living, and or shared family living setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to the original duties, the following are essential responsibilities intended to address workplace safety, sanitation, professionalism, and teamwork:
- Support the development and regular revisions of Individual Program Plans by providing thoughtful input and accurate information.
- Monitor participants’ level of engagement to assess effectiveness of the habilitation plan.
- Document and recommend to the Area Director any actions necessary to overcome barriers or impediments to participant success.
- Maintain accurate records and enter supporting documentation in Therap daily.
- Assist Program Coordinator in completing Annual Assessments for individuals served.
- Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Administer medication as per physician instructions for individuals served.
- Respond to crises in accordance with EDS policy and training.
- Transport individuals served, when necessary, using EDS vehicles.
- Make decisions based upon EDS training, in accordance with EDS’s mission, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain sanitary, clean, and safe environments including restrooms, communal areas, and participant spaces. Duties include: unclogging toilets, cleaning up floods or leaks, ensuring floors and common areas are dry and free of hazards, and responding promptly to sanitation issues.
- Report hazards and safety issues immediately to supervisor or management (for example: flooding, unsafe flooring, blocked or broken facilities, or anything that could pose risk to participants or staff).
- Exhibit professional communication and behavior at all times: respectful tone, timely cooperation with supervisors, constructive feedback in meetings, and support of team morale.
- Uphold boundaries of professionalism with coworkers, supervisors, participants, and guardians. Inappropriate comments, mocking, or undermining supervisory staff are not acceptable.
- Provide support when staffing is limited: be willing to perform tasks required of the DSP role including cleaning, facility maintenance, and direct care as needed.
- Make sure that when supervision or direct care assignments shift (for example, supervisor stepping in for DSP duties), the chain of command and responsibilities remain respected and duties are shared as appropriate.
- All other duties as assigned by direct supervisor and management.
Lifting / Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Repetitive motions.
- Pushing or pulling.
- Kneel, stoop, crouch or crawl; position self or move in confined spaces.
Qualifications / Education
- At least 19 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of work experience in the human service field (developmental disabilities, social work, counseling/guidance, psychology, sociology, human development, mental health) or related human service field.
- Nebraska Medication Aide preferred.
- CPR / First Aid certification (preferred).
- Proof of a valid Driver’s License and good driving record.
- Able to pass required background checks (APS / CPS register checks, national and state background checks).
- Satisfactory oral & written communication skills.
- Basic math and computer skills.
Training Provided by EDS
EDS will provide training in:
- CPR / First Aid
- Medication Aide (if required)
- MANDT (de-escalation, etc.)
- Therap documentation
- Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation policies
- Orientation
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: From $17.00 per hour
